Well, he's obviously not Khan.

He's not Gary Mitchell, because they already did that story in the IDW Star Trek comics.

Everyone respect continuity until they don't feel like it anymore.

I don't think the poster has enough sci-fi feel to it. Otherwise it's ok.

That's a fair point.

I'm leaning towards Benedict playing an original creation at this point. Part of that is my own hope based on available evidence.

Maybe they did use the TOS cannon villain line to throw us off. Who knows?

That's NOT San Francisco. There are two important indicators:
1.) Cumberbatch doesn't wear flowers in his hair
2.) It's London

What a intriguing poster, not something I would expect from a Trek teaser poster. But its nice to finally have something!

Maybe he's playing a disgruntled Starfleet captain who feels Starfleet has gone to soft and with so many threats in the universe, he feels it should be surivival of the fittest and therein makes a plan with the Klingons.

Interesting theory ... especially considering the "canonical villian" in this movie may well be played by another character who has already appeared as a canonical villain: Peter Weller as an extreme right-wing militaristic activist/terrorist.

I think the term "rip-off" just throws people into a frenzy since it carries a sort of negative connotation. It's pretty obvious it shares similarities with the Batman poster and that's okay. I'm sure the Batman poster was influenced by some other, older poster, that I can't recall. Either way it's a very dynamic looking poster and I'm super hyped.

A poster on io9.com came up with an interesting theory about who our villain might possibly be:

Quote:

"Garth of Izar was a decorated, highly-regarded officer in the Federation Starfleet, who rose to rank of Fleet Captain in the course of his service through the mid-23rd century. His career dissolved in a dramatic descent into madness and attempted genocide, resulting in his commitment to the Elba II asylum for the criminally insane."

Now this is the synopsis

""In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness.
When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.
As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew."

My bets on it being Garth.

Of course, it's not for certain. But, it would be very interesting if it turned out to be correct.

I really REALLY hope they pay tribute to these kinds of scenes:
VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

in the new movie!

They can do it easily - just have them start the movie, before the main story kicks in, travelling to some random planet where Kirk has to fight a lizardman hand-to-hand <3

Lol Garth is about the least intimidating name i could imagine for a villian. I really hope Benedict isnt playing someone named Garth.

And besides im tired of psychopath villians. Not everyone needs to be the Joker out to cause anarchy. I want a sane powerful methodical villian with a clear motivation who thinks he is doing the right thing. I want someone with conviction not someone with a screw loose. I also dont think you waste someone like Bennedict on a crazy character.

Maybe they will change the name to "Garth Vader" to make it more scary.

Is it really though? I mean yes they may have used an actual outline of london in that poster but is it supposed to be actually london?

I mean should the london of 200 years in the future really be that recognizable to us? Maybe it's intended to be just a generic city stand-in?

Yeah it's London. there's more than one London building in the poster and its intentional.

Pretty crappy poster. If I didn't already know it was for Star Trek I would have no idea whatsoever it's for Star Trek.

The starfleet symbol is on the poster in the negative space where the character is standing. Pretty obvious it is trek.
