Honestly, the fact that Iron Man has been able to outdo the X-Films is a testament to the fact that Fox's X-Men franchise hasn't really reached its full potential, IMO.

The X films had popular cartoons and comics preceding them. Iron Man was a second tier character. IMO, fox has ultimately been holding these films back, as much as love X1, X2, and First Class.

Lets hope this sequel changes that, both with itself and for next movies.

I think that's a matter opinion. But i vastly prefer x1, 2 and first class over either iron man films.

Wolverine owns the X Men on film,tv and comics. He will continue to do so. Theres nothing to prove otherwise.

Despite all the crap XMOW got and being available to watch online before the films release, it still made more $ . FC only beat it by like 14 mil internationally. The films are actually too close in WW numbers to really say one made alot more money.

If this next Wolverine film makes less then FC then that may lead to you being right as far as the films, but if anything I would assume that even with a horrible film and being leaked online A Wolverine film still made alot of money. It had everything going against it pretty bad, but people still went and paid. That shows alot of popularity and box office power imo.

It was another team movie with Wolverine as the lead, but this time with new actors playing those known mutants.

The curious thing is that the very first movie of a new franchise like Ironman, with a lead actor less famous than Hugh made much more movie than a movie with Wolverine, Gambit, Deadpool, young Cyclops and young Emma.

But no, Wolverine sells tickets.

Robert Downey Jr. was less popular than Hugh Jackman? Really? RDJ's casting and performance had a great deal to do with the success of the film. Iron Man also came out after the success of Transformers. I'm sure many children saw and young people saw Iron Man as the "next Transformers". Let's also not forget that Iron Man's origins were altered to resonate with Americans in Today's world.

Yes, indeed. But of course, back in 1999 when X1 was filming, it was a more uncertain time for comic book movies.

However, there is no such excuse these days.

X2 is solid but not epic, and while X3 did have a good amount of scale and excitement, it didn't have strong enough filmmaking to sustain itself. First Class is an odd one to explain.

I certainly do hope the X-films reach their full potential. While the Marvel Studios films aren't perfect by any means, they never hold back. And Nolan's Batman films haven't held back either.

XO Wolverine had a bunch of extras that most didn't care about and leaked online before it was released, plus it was absolutely crap, yet it still overall out-grossed First Class. X2 and X3 with Wolverine as the lead out-grossed First Class, I'm not sure why you are arguing this, Wolverine is far and away the most popular character when it comes to the X Men and the numbers support this when it comes to the films.

I think Jackman's a trooper so I don't dislike him. I didn't like Wolverine's writing in X3 or X-Men Origins. It felt like a different character.

First Class was a prequel (well at least to casual viewers) and it didn't have Wolverine. Plus, a lot of people here didn't even expect it to be a good film.

IMO, there was no excuse the day Spider-Man 1 broke box office records and went on to gross 400 mill domestic. And that's only two years after X1 came out.

It's like you said: they've been holding themselves back. You've got the much loved Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, McKellen's Magneto and Stewart's Professor X, a tried and true cast of iconic comic characters....and the highest grossing film so far has only been in the 200 mill range domestically?

An X-Men film potentially has the all out action of Avengers AND the darker social themes of a Nolan Batman flick.

Fox needs to step it up big time for this, IMO.

X-Men 3 could potentially be very successful and massive, I think it would at least hit the $300 million mark at the domestic box-office if only the movie ended up as good as X-Men 2.

Studios have to satisfy three key groups: Critics, fans and mainstream audiences.

It's clear that many fans and mainstream audiences were baffled or disappointed by the character line-up in First Class. Critics recognised it was a good movie though. When you think about First Class now, it feels like some sort of indie film rather than a Hollywood blockbuster.

Avengers gave most people what they were wanting or expecting, and even the more stuffy, highbrow critics gave it high marks for being exactly what they expected (a mega-team-up movie that embraced the comics wholeheartedly), even if it's not a perfect film.

Films can still deliver surprises but straying so far that you add in Angel Salvadore and Riptide as key characters, and including Havok despite the timeline issues, was not a wise move.
