Chris Nolan, Morgan Freeman weigh in on 'Dark Knight' controversies

And Christopher Nolan thought "Inception" was the big mind-bender! At the London premiere of "The Dark Knight Rises" Wednesday night, the director was inevitably confronted with questions about the apparent perils of saying negative things about the film, as well as about the Bane vs. Bain Capital conspiracy whipped up by the political blogosphere that later went mainstream when "The Daily Show" and Rush Limbaugh took notice (one a little more humorously than the other).

Guess which issue Nolan called "peculiar"?

"I'm not sure how to address something that bizarre, to be honest," the British filmmaker said on the red carpet about the chatter over whether the film's supervillain, Bane, is supposed to be representative of Bain Capital, the financial services firm once headed up by presidential hopeful Mitt Romney that Romney opponents say did a better job enriching its own coffers than it did helping other companies.

"I really don't have an answer for it, it's a very peculiar comment to make," Nolan concluded.

He does, however, understand where the rabid Batman fans are coming from, to an extent. Yesterday, Rotten Tomatoes suspended commenting on the Dark Knight Rises reviews coming in (the first time the site had ever taken such measures) after critics who had the audacity to not like it were pelted with harsh retorts like, "You should die in a fire."

"I think the fans are very passionate about these characters the way a lot of people are very passionate," Nolan said. "Batman's been around for over 70 years and there's a reason for that. He has a huge appeal, so I think you know people certainly respond to the character."


Perhaps Nolan should talk Caped Crusader lore with Morgan Freeman, who played gadget master Lucius Fox throughout the trilogy, sometime.

Freeman also called the Bane-Bain controversy "ridiculous," adding, "Chris wrote a fictional story that didn't have any political thoughts in mind, so it's like art or something you know, it's all in the mind of the beholder."


But as Nolan would probably be first to point out, Bane was created by Chuck Dixon, Doug Moench and Graham Nolan (no relation) and first showed up in a comic book in 1993.

Can we all get back to enjoying -- or, perhaps, not enjoying -- the anticipation of waiting for this movie to come out now?

The Dark Knight Rises Passes $300 Million Domestically

Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises has become only the third movie of 2012 to surpass the $300 million mark domestically. Having earned $8.7 million on Tuesday, its 12th day in theaters, Nolan's third and final Batman movie has reached $304 million domestically.

The other two 2012 films that have earned more than $300 million are Marvel's The Avengers with $615.9 million total and The Hunger Games with $405.9 million.

After 12 days, Batman Begins had earned $122.5 million and The Dark Knight was at $333.9 million. Batman Begins collected $205.3 million total domestically, while The Dark Knight reached $533.3 million.

We don't have the updated international total for "Rises" yet, but as of Sunday it was $248.2 million.

DC Entertainment Plans for John Blake?

Well, that didn’t take long. It looks like DC Entertainment is prepared to capitalize on the success of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises film and the buzz surrounding Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Detective Robin John Blake.

[Didio on John Blake] The character appeared to be an amalgam of all of Batman’s Robins: Dick Grayson’s courage and skill (Nightwing), Jason Todd’s passion (Red Hood), Tim Drake’s detectice skills (Red Robin), and Damian Wayne’s impulsiveness (Robin).

DC Comics Co-Publisher Dan DiDio has teased on his facebook page that the character will pop up in DC Comics on a “mission“.

Will it be a digital comic first continuatuon of The Dark Knight Rises continuity a la Smallville Season 11? Followed by print version?

Or will the character make his debut in the DC Comics Relaunch’s New 52? Stay tuned.

No official word yet on a sequel to The Dark Knight Rises or a reboot of the movie franchise.

Holy smokes, Batman. The rumors, speculation and general chit-chat can be put to rest.

Christopher Nolan’s Batman epic The Dark Knight Rises will be released on Blu-ray combo pack, DVD, and digital download on Dec. 4, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group announced exclusively to EW.

The last film in Nolan’s dark, gritty Gotham City trilogy, starring Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, and Tom Hardy as brutal villain Bane, will also be available in a limited edition Blu-ray Bat Cowl collectible package — not quite in time for your Halloween costume, but there’s always next year.

The Blu-ray combo pack is stuffed with a bunch of extras, from a documentary about the Batmobile, where all five Batmobiles are together for the first time, to Ending the Knight, an in-depth look featuring about 17 featurettes at how Nolan and his production team made The Dark Knight Rises, from Batman vs. Bane to totally demolishing a city street. Both the Blu-ray and DVD include a featurette called The Journey of Bruce Wayne. There are also trailers and art galleries.

The actor is also quick to dispel any ambiguity about the film’s ending. Asked about the scene in which Alfred spies Bruce Wayne and Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle sitting together at a neighboring table in that restaurant — a shot that suggests that Alfred’s wish for Bruce has come true, that his former charge has found a companion to bring him some measure of inner peace and happiness, enabling him to finally leave behind his self-appointed role as Gotham’s unofficial protector — Caine is quite emphatic.

“They were there,” Caine said. “They were real. There was no imagination. They were real and he was with Anne, the cat lady, and I was happy ever after for him as I told him during the picture.”

'Dark Knight Rises' Returns to Top of Home Entertainment Charts

Returning to the top spot was Warner Home Video’s Batman epic The Dark Knight Rises, which had been resting at No. 2 the previous two weeks after a No. 1 debut a month ago. (Rises would have topped the charts a week ago had so many of its sales not counted toward the tally for The Dark Knight Trilogy.)

The popularity of Batman during the holiday season also managed to bring the two precursor films to The Dark Knight Rises back into the top 20, with Batman Begins at No. 19 and The Dark Knight at No. 18.

Dark Knight Rises and Ted also topped Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart for the week, with Disney’s Finding Nemo moving up to No. 3.

In addition, The Dark Knight Rises led Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, pulling off a triple-play victory that is rare for a title in its fourth week of release. The title had been unavailable at Redbox until Christmas Eve due to a rental embargo on Warner titles.
