i cannot say i noticed that before.. but yeah it is unlike anything we have seen before. It doesn't look as 'stylised' as it did in the comics - a hairy chest is far easier to draw i guess... unless that pic is a joke..
Either way... it's definitly superMAN |

In addition, all McG had directed up to that point were the two campy Charlie's Angels movies and high-camp music videos like "Walking On the Sun". Warner hired him based off this because they figured he knew what "the kids" liked. |

Haven't heard about Justin Timberlake or Beyonce, but again, they've both done serious things too. Directors consider lots of things, doesn't mean it's their ideal choice or something they're particularly fond of. As far as I know Henry Cavill, Josh Hartnett, and Brendan Fraser were the ones who were actual contenders, Cavill being the favorite. Selma Blair and Scarlett Johannson were up for Lois. And Johnny Depp and Robert Downey, Jr. up for Lex. I'm not saying it would have been good, but he wasn't hired to make a campy movie and he had no intention of making a campy movie.

Yeah, McG wanted Beyonce for Lois, or at least seriously considered her. I know Timberlake was also targeted, but I remember hearing that was Jon Peters' idea, not McG's. Though maybe McG was also interested in him.
Anyway, I'm not sure how McG's Superman would have turned out, but I'm glad it didn't happen. Even though Cavill probably would have been Superman anyway, he's older now and has matured a lot as an actor. I wasn't wild about him playing Supes back then because he was so young that it might not have worked. But now, I can't think of a better choice.

Well of course McG isn't going to say he was going to make a campy film, no one actually wants to make camp, nine times out of ten it's accidental. But given the script and the creative elements involved (Jon Peters), I'd say the finished product stood a good chance of being camp.
Hartnett and Fraser were considered when Ratner was helming, not McG. |

I believe Fraser was considered when McG was still on the project. I remember reading an article when the movie was announced that Fraser was hitting the gym hard because he was trying to land the role. Not sure about Hartnett though.

I read that Hartnett landed the role under Brett Ratner but when he was told it would be 3 movies over 10 years he declined. I can't remember the book I read but it said that Hartnett did a screen test and aced it. I think Hartnett would've been a great choice.

Hartnett is a solid actor but I've never felt he was a good fit for Superman. I could see him as another hero character though.

I think he'd have been great to be honest but we'll never know. I'm just glad we've got Cavill and Man of Steel now.

The chest hair is another thing he needs to keep is identity a secret.
The Clark Kent we see in Metropolis isn't manly enough for chest hair. So, he obviously can't be Superman.
