Nice surprise - http://www.yahoo.com/?r391=1356799187 (middle page right)
I guess the Superman-haters are a "bigger" minority than I thought.

Could it really be that alone or is it just that Superman is the ultimate definition of a superhero?

The trailer probably had a little bit to do with that. They ask the same question earler this year, but it was alot closer then that with superman in the lead, so the trailer did help.

There's a poll on the right side of the page asking "Who's the greatest Superhero?" Batman, Spiderman or Superman. Superman is leading by a wide margin. There have currently been a little over 291,000 votes.

There's no reason this shouldn't be a good movie with the talented cast and crew and long post production time. But being a good movie isn't enough. It needs to be great. I feel positive but I'm not going to to set my expectations to unrealistic levels.
Forget it. I'm setting my expectations to unrealistic levels. The more I watch the trailer the more I expect a great movie. |

I just hope that this isn't a case where it's received very well but doesn't make a huge box office smash like J.J Abrams' Star Trek Film.

Hm, that's not showing up on my iPhone browser. Good to see though!! As for the film quality, it's hard to accept less than greatness at this point, but I'm setting realistic expectations for the box office as it is a relaunch for a character the general audience is skeptical towards. I will be happy with a $300 million domestic box office as its realistic and should guarantee a sequel.

I'd be perfectly happy with that actually, as long as it makes enough for a sequel. If it's that well-received, then the sequel would have no problem making serious bank.

I honestly do wonder though that even if this film were to be well received, much better than SR; if it only made like around the same that SR made, would that still prompt Warner Bros. to go forward with a sequel? I would imagine that they would hope for MOS to at least make 500 Million, especially since I remember them saying on how they had hoped for SR to have made that much in the past.

Do we have any idea of what the budget for MOS was? I think SR was around $215 million or something like that, I believe. If it's around the same budget as SR was, I would suspect that WB would be more than happy if it did at least $350 domestically. I think when it's all said and done, and the WW gross of the film is around $600 million, then that will be more than enough for a sequel to be greenlit.

Unless Snyder and co. made the scale of this film to be similar like Thor's first film, then I can't see this film having had anything lower than $200 million for its production budget. |

SR had a budget of 207 million (which has been established by many sources), and it made 391 million.
I think that BoxOfficeMojo has added up the money WB spent on the failed the projects that were abandoned before Superman Returns happened and added their cost to SR's budget. Now if we assume that MOS does get similar numbers of viewers as SR did and add 15 % increase increase in the earnings due to 3D we get around 450 million worldwide. |

Studios never add Marketing budget to production budget, it is Not a standard practice.
And that is true for all Studios. |

So I wonder what the "magic" number will be, in order to greenlight a sequel. They have got to have some sort of number in their head.

Well it would definitely help if we knew on what kind of a budget that they were working with for this film.
Given that it's a producer's job to help secure funds for the film in order for it to be made, I wonder how much money Nolan and co. were able to get for this film, let alone if his name and past successes helped in getting a pretty decent amount. |

I reckon it as to do around 600 mill to gain a sequel and I think it will definitely hit around that, anything else is a bonus.

The original budget number that was floating around was $175M. That sounds about right - especially if Snyder has a reputation for getting bang out of buck and if WB was skittish, given the cost of the last Superman movie.
On the other hand… with the long post-production and 3D (and if everyone is impressed with how the film is coming together) I could see more money being added at the backend - for better/longer cgi scenes or reshoots, etc. So could be around $200M when all is said and done. |

I agree. I think its safe to say that the cheese and camp will be ( mostly ) checked at the door. I get a sense that this will be epic. Epic like star wars, indiana jones, and lotr. Thats just the feel I get. The trailer only reinforced it. Could be wrong tho.
