The thing is, they are kind of too far behind in competing with Marvel already to consider shelving one of their tentpole heroes because he didn't make big bucks.
I'd be very surprised if this movie doesn't get a sequel, based on that alone... |

I think it will definitely do well enough at the box office

It will do well at the Box Office, it's just a question of how well.

If MOS makes GL numbers, then - yes - the franchise is dead in the water. But even a relatively modest $500M (world wide) gross makes it viable.

Green Lantern was a second rate character and brand (popularity wise) and the movie had terrible word of mouth. That and I don't think general audiences were too excited for the film after they saw in the trailer that Green Lantern would be squaring off against Enlarged Head Man. Man Of Steel has to be absolute **** piss dreadful in order for them to shelve any ideas for a sequel... ya know, like Superman Returns lol.
Truthfully speaking though this film has more buzz and more positive energy than Returns ever did so I don't see it tanking but the movie DOES have to be good. |

I think its good that 7 years will have passed since SR.
I don't know a sinlge person IRL who like that movie. There are some who think superman is a dumb character BECAUSE of that movie. Hopefully MOS will not suffer the way The Incredible Hulk did, where too many people still had the bad taste of the 2003 Hulk when the 2008 one came out. HULK 2003 was a horrid movie. It was like having a urinary catheter pulled out by accident. You don't just forget something like that. |

Well for me, GL got it wrong from the start with the casting of RR. Then that awful suit didnt help either. GL felt like GR to me, a film that wanted to be taken seriously but I was unable too. It wasnt even fun.

Which is silly. Green Lantern is awesome. Ghost Rider is... I don't know. Didn't watch it.

the public also likes the transformers movies, probably not the best back up when arguing something as subjective as film quality

They'd have to see it for us to know that.
But my friends and I like it, that's good enough for me.

I enjoyed Green Lantern, it had some fun stuff. I don't love it or hate it, its merely okay. But if Man of Steel is anything like Green Lantern than I think it will be a disgrace to not only to Superman but WB DC films as a whole. Green Lantern could of been amazing. If Man of Steel doesn't do well and isn't well received then it may spell a grim future of the only DC superhero films being Batman films...

+$400M would be an astonishing take. Even ~$300M (plus a proportionate foreign BO) is ambitious.

I based my figure for USA domestic gross on The Dark Knight Rise which is currently at $448,139,099 according to box office mojo, while the foreign box office is $632,902,188. I see MOS making over 300mil in USA but the foreign gross is hard to predict as the example of Superman Returns which didn't perform well in foreign box office attested.Considering that almost all the comic book films this year performed well, I see no reason why MOS will do likewise - as long as the film is very good and not a stinker like Green Lantern.

TDKR was a sequel to a hugely popular predecessor. Best case, I’d put MOS in the unknown/blank slate category - like the first Iron Man. And if it’s lucky, MOS will do Iron Man numbers (not too shabby at all).
