Default Your opinion of applauding at the theater?

So i'm just wondering what is the opinion of applauding at the end of a movie? Personally i think it's a bit silly, to me applause is a signifier of respect to those involved in the performance i.e plays, performances, speeches etc.

At a theater none of the people actually involved with the film are there (aside from special screenings). So i don't see much of a point, it doesn't bother me per se when people do applause i just don't tend to join in.

What's your take?

It's silly, but I'll do it if it's a movie I absolutely love (and if other people are doing it).

It's pointless, sometimes fun to do
Depends on how enjoyable is the film

I don't see a problem with it. I mean it's after the film ends so it's not really ruining anything. I did it at the end of The Avengers along with the rest of the audience because we really enjoyed it.

Silly and not really sure what's the point. Are you applauding the projectionist?

Luckily there's no real culture of it here. Strangely, I've only seen applause for movies here this year... scattered applause for Avengers and a good round of applause for TDKR. But never before that.

I never partake , but do enjoy hearing others show appreciation for the film. It's only when someone talks or does something irrelevant that bothers me.

Have their ever been cases where people booed instead of clapped? But I guess if that many people didn't like the movie they all would of left long before it ended.

It's dumb, clapping at the end especially, but sometimes a moment just calls for it.

It was initially discomforting to me, but I've warmed up to applause. It's better when you have a fun audience.

There's been only a handful of times I've attended theater screenings where the audience applauded at the end. And they were usually during opening midnight screenings. First one I can remember was Spider-Man 2, and the latest two were The Dark Knight Rises, and Skyfall.

No issues with it.

Only during midnight showings.

Midnight showings are like an event - a social, communal experience unto itself, and thusly, clapping, cheering, etc. is fitting for such an entity.

Any other time it's lame.

It's fine if the auditorium is packed, and the movie has to be good.

I think many are missing the point of why people do it at movie theaters. It's not to let the filmmakers know their film was enjoyed. The audience KNOWS they aren't there and can't hear any applause. The applause is more a way of the audience communicating with each other how well a film was received. If you enjoyed a film then it's nice to know you're not alone in that sentiment but people don't like talking to total strangers so clapping seems a simple solution.

That said, I don't do it myself but I can see why many do.

If you want to do it, save it for the credits.

I can't sum it up any better!

It's always the opening day or the opening weekend when it's very packed and the movie has to be great. The applause heightens the experience.

Challenge accepted To sum it up even better: It's fun!

People saying they "don't see the point" or variations of that...I ask, what's the point in going to a movie in the first place? It's fun. Subjective of course, but that right there is the reason those who do it, do it.

I like being in the zone of a movie and hearing all the dialogue and such. Especially when watching it for the first time. I don't have a problem with people applauding at the end.

What about just doing the gangnam style dance instead of applauding. This way we can tell who liked the film and who did not.

Are slow claps appropriate?

Only had 2 cases of clapping and that was at both TDK and Rises. Only at the end too which was good.
