I won't argue the cinematography too much seeing as 'Skyfall' was surprisingly amazing looking. But I'd still go with TDKR in those other two categories. The visual effects are pretty near seamless.

There are two ways to play the “Oscar prediction game”: 1) Declare who should win/get nominated (based on artistic merit); 2) declare who might win/get nominated (based on the spotty history of the awards - “Hollywood politics,” body-of-work honor, redressing a past snub, etc.).

I think many who thought TDKR had a nom shot were thinking in terms of category 2. I don’t think many were insisting it was Citizen Kane (which, btw, got nominated... but didn’t win ).

Why does it bother you. This year The Amazing Spider-Man came out, I loved the film, utterly enjoyed it, had fun, ...it didn't get any noms on the tech side. But that doesn't take away my enjoyment of the film or my value of it.

If you love TDKR, good on you, if you didn't, good on you. It's your right and opinon to feel either way, but i never gathered why someone gets upset over the idea that TDKR didn't get a nomination. Sometimes thems are just the breaks.

I feel like fans have gotten greedy, do you know how psyched comic fans would of been in 1999 to think that an actor was nominated and WON for playing The Joker? Now a days? Meh...WHERE ARE OUR TECH NOMINATIONS!!!!

All things being equal, one could imagine that an Academy member would feel more comfortable voting for a film featuring a man in a Brioni suit rather than a man in a rubber suit with pointy ears.

I suppose, to me, that it mattered because it would have helped to further distance the film, which I believe to be wonderful, from the horror of July 20th.

Such a great year in worldwide cinema , and that oscar list....blargh.

The cinematography list , lol , no greig faser , no yeoman , no malaimare. And i only wrote dp's that worked on american movies.

I thought i read Leo stole the show in Django but its Waltz the one nominated. I have yet to see the movie (it hasnt opened)

Not all. It won't make it better but I think it's nice if a film I liked is recognized. But you're right. It doesn't matter in the end.

Leonardo DiCarprio being left off of the "Best Supporting Actor" list.
Kathryn Bigelow being left off of the "Best Directors" list.
Beasts of the Southern Wild picking up FOUR nominations (all in major categories).
The Dark Knight Rises being completely SHUT OUT.

It's really just a shame. A lot of the best work of this year went completely unrecognized... It's truly just a shame.

You say otherwise, you are a blind fan boy. TDK was a medium changing film with one of the best acting roles of the year in it and deserved to get a Best Picture nom and rightfully deserved a Best Supporting Actor win.

Bond and Batman are pretty much my twin pop cultural obsessions. Have read all the books, bought bootlegs of the McLusky-Gammidge Daily Express comic strips decades ago. A Bond film on the ABC Friday or Sunday night movie was an event in my childhood. I just don't believe Skyfall to be anywhere near the film that TDKR is. I kind of feel that it is being celebrated because it's the first Bond since Terence Young to have a real director. And nope, I don't count Martin Campbell- Casino Royale was a second rate copy of the Bourne-Batman Begins model. Well, Mendes made a first rate copy of the TDK model, right down to having the great Thomas Newman write a bond-ified Zimmer Dark Knight score. I'm happy that James Bond got a good film- I've been chewing on the first four for decades- but I can't see how it can possibly be considered superior to the jaw-dropping epic that is The Dark Knight Rises.

TDKR wasnt one of my favorites for the year,
But it matters because there are a lot of people here who who wanted to see the people who worked on this film honored for their work.
And the nomination for TDKR itself as Best Picture would have been a compliment to the entire Trilogy.

I am a little dissapointed for the lack of technical nominations. The film was visually stunnning, I think it deserved at least a nod in Cinematography, Editing, and production design, IMO. At least back in '09 Hugh Jackman made a reference to TDK in the opening number, I was hoping to see something similar this year.

I agree with this. In fact I said when this movie came out it would not be nomiated and the talk of Oscars was hype. I don't say that with an "I told you so," mentality, but only to point out that while it was a good conclusion to the franchise it was not to the level that the Dark Knight was.

The Academy really wants to recognize the smaller more "arthouse" style films as opposed to the blockbusters. But even then, if it is a blockbuster, it has to be spectacular. This was a good conclusion to the trillogy, but it was not on the level that the Dark Knight was.

Fans can enjoy and love the conclusion to this trillogy, but no it's not Oscar worthy.

The nominations mean absolutely nothing except for the crew members who never really get recognized in this industry. There's some absolutely stunning technical work doing by this crew and the industry just frankly ignored not only this film, but Prometheus and the Master. From a technical standpoint, you could argue only Spielberg's Lincoln being in the same category as Prometheus, Rises, and the Master. That's it.

And let's be honest, we all know why Rises was ignored this year. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

I've been pretty secure in my opinion of Rises, this director, and this trilogy for months now. I don't need the nominations for validation whatsoever but come on, there's some ******** on this list of nominations this year. Just calling a spade a spade.

Again, seriously, no Master for cinematography?! Is Hollywood that pissed at PT Anderson for tackling, however vaguely, Scientology? Because the lack of cinematography nomination for that film sure smells like it. The same could be said for Bigelow and the smear campaign against her. There's no reason whatsoever that she doesn't get a nomination for Best Director other than it being a smear campaign against her, considering the controversy surrounding Zero Dark Thirty. It's pathetic.

So odds for Zero Dark Thirty are long at best .

I don't doubt that the shooting may have played a factor in individual voters. But come on man the whole Academy membership votes in secret on these things. I don't believe there was some vast conspiracy to say "don't vote for that, we don't want the negative publicity."
