Given that Keaton was wanting "Forever" to tell Batman's origin story, I don't think he and Burton considered 89 an origin story either.

It's a toss up to this day between Batman Begins and Iron Man. While Batman Begins started an absolutely amazing and breathtaking trilogy, it also broke some rules with the CBMs we saw beforehand that had a very philosophical tone to it, but Iron Man is a great standalone origin since Iron Man 2 was such a bad apple and doesn't follow the stride from its origin film at all.

And then the list would continue with Spider-Man, Superman: The Movie and Captain America: The First Avenger to round the top five origins.

That's not what qualifies an origin story. An origin story is about how the hero came to be. In Batman, he's already Batman by the time the film starts. Batman: Year One shows much more of Bruce's evolution towards becoming Batman much more by comparison.

Bruce's killing got more or less the same screentime than in Batman begins. it's not like Begins showed 30 minutes of Chill killing the Waynes while B89 30 seconds.

And then, if I'm not mistakenm Superman's training wa snot shown in STM. So, is it not an origin film wither?

Now I cannot give a damn about any director's intentions. What the movie showed was there, no more nor less. If they didn't want to show the origin, then they failed. But, if I'm not again mistaken, their intention was NOT not to show the origin but to keep it a secret while Batman was introduced to keep him a total mistery.





When Batman Begins starts he's half-way into Batman. We know about Bruce's parents killing through a flashback, just like, a certain other Batman movie. Same as Batman Year One.

Yeah, Batman89 is not an origin movie, if the term is to mean anything. It does not explore enough of his origins to qualify, we do not see why he does not use a gun, how he came to be such a good fighter, where he got his gadgets from, why he chose the motif of the bat. We get the reason why he chose to fight crime, but absolutely no reasoning as to why he chose to fight it in such an unusual manner, which is actually the most interesting part of the origin of course.

That's not the point. lol. B89 followed Batman's first months in crime fighting and ended with him being recognized by the city, just like in BB. So in some ways it's an origin, with the training skipped.

No it's not, not if the term is to mean anything. When they show the murder of his parents, well, that could have come out of any old 'man becomes a cop/vigilante' movie, what needs to be shown in a *Batman* movie, is how exactly he came to choose that manner of crimefighting.
Showing the hero's origin has always generally meant how he got to that highly unusual point of gaining superpowers and coming to terms with them/deciding to become a vigilante/sh, or training and taking up a motif in Batman's case.
What you are talking about is showing his first adventures.

That is the point. Just because it's set in Batman's early days doesn't make it an origin story. An origin story documents how the hero in question came to be a hero. In Batman's case the training, the choosing the image of a bat etc is all part and parcel of that.

When Batman 1989 starts, Batman's been in Gotham for around a month or so already according to Knox. Burton completely skipped over the origin. The only reason they even flash backed to his parents being killed is because it was connected to the Joker. That was a last minute addition Burton put in during the writers strike.
