It's like Webfoot Hero said, everyone is a caricature of themselves by now except Winston.
I really want to like it but it's harder to every week. Though it's no 1600 Penn... My Lord.

I think BBT tries too hard...and it's obvious it does.

TV legend Conrad Bain from Diff'rent Strokes has died and I thought this quote of his was rather interesting from a few years back commenting on the current state of TV sitcoms.
"I think they got off the track when they first hired a standup comic to do the lead," he said. "Instead of people creating real situations, you get people trying to act funny." Which in reality is correct for it seemed in the 90's that every stand-up comedian was getting their own show from Roseanne, Tim Allen, Jerry Seinfeld.

Yeah, but given that Seinfeld was funnier than a great deal of sitcoms to come before it, that argument is pretty flawed. Sounds like sour grapes to me.

Speaking of New Girl, I feel like pretty much any show that does the "Ross and Rachel thing" quickly loses my interest. For my money The Big Bang Theory and New Girl aren't all that bad, but the on-again/off-again romances between lead characters are such an obvious ploy to keep people interested it has the opposite effect. Just be funny and focus on creating a quality show, you don't need to do a soap opera at the same time.

A good example of this, for me, are my very different opinions of two Adult Swim superhero cartoons, Venture Brothers and Frisky Dingo. I love Venture Brothers, I can't stand Frisky Dingo. Both are funny, but Venture Brothers actually has characters and themes that draw me in and a real emotional core to while, whereas Frisky Dingo is just a string of jokes and witty dialogue. I get invested in Venture Brothers, I get bored and annoyed at Frisky Dingo. Or, another talk show example. A big factor in what talk shows I like, period, are the hosts. Not just how funny they are, but how likable or charismatic they are, or how interesting the subject mater of their material is to me. I love Conan and The Daily Show because Conan O'Brien and Jon Stewart are both charismatic and likable as well as funny, and in the later's case I also have a strong investment in the show's primarily political subject matter. I also love Craig Ferguson, who's not as funny as the former two by any stretch, at least I think so, but is so likable and draws me in with his persona that I'm still engaged and thoroughly entertained. And then there's Jimmy Kimmel, who's funny, but doesn't have a very strong presence on screen and generally talks about things I don't care about, so even though his stuff makes me laugh I just don't care. That's how I am with comedy, anyway.

The Big Bang Theory. There's literally not one redeeming factor to that show.

I love Big Bang Theory and I agree about the "butthurt fanboy" comment. The show gets a ton of hate on this board, and that's precisely the reason why. Is it taken to extremes? Of course, because it's TV. Does anyone actually make as much of an ass out of themselves in public as Nick does on New Girl? Of course not (well, I hope not) but it's okay because it's a TV show.
I just find it funny how BBT seems to "offend" so many people here. I remember someone a while back someone on these boards compared it to blackface. Total bullsh**. Comparing the once socially-accepted mockery of an entire race of people to poking fun at a subculture of geeks who attend too many comic book conventions is absolutely absurd. Anyway, as for shows I don't find funny at all: The Mindy Project The Office Any show with Reba McEntyre (Oh sweet Sara Rue, why did you have to lower yourself to star in this crap?) 2 Broke Girls (Kat Dennings, you lovely little sellout) Two and a Half Men

The key difference being that Nick on New Girl is actually funny, while no one on Big Bang has ever been.
