it's still a painting... it's just digital. It's just a different type. I appreciate all kinds of art... you can't physically do photo-realistic art with real paint and canvas... you will always have the texture of the paint and canvas... but that's also where fine art painting has the strength that digital art does not.

The war some people have over digital and fine art is beyond ridiculous. It takes an incredibly amount of skill for both.

Google painters from the American hyper realistic movement from the late 60's and early 70's, like Chuck Close and others, and please tell me then if you can trace textures of paint and canvas on those paintings.

Apart from that I completely agree with you when it comes to modern digital art.

while this is easily the best photo-realistic painting i've ever seen.. i will however say.. i can tell in the far away shot that it's not actually a photo. Maybe a photo with the quality dated back to the 60s... but that digital painting imo is far more realistic.

Painting should be restricted to stuff involving paint. I never made any judgement calls regarding skill or whatever. Just don't think it should be called "painting".

Well, first of all, one has to know that all this was an expression in art. Not just simple photorealism. These guys chosed special models for the sake of f****g art back then (and I'm not defending it, just telling).

But just to bring us òut of it, am I right that you're refering to this picture when saying "that digital painting imo is far more realistic"?

If I'm wrong please disregard from this pic, then I'm sorry and misundertood you.

But if I'm happens to be right, please just check out for instance Chloe Moretz's hair in that pic and realise how NOT photorealisic it looks, compared to the paintings above. It's actually completely awful compaired to the stuff I provided above..

Someone pointed out the space between her eyes, but I won't go that far myself.

To me above pic of Hit Girl is a very nice digtal paínting, but when it comes to hyper realistic art I prefer the old masters (Chuck Close and others).

Crap, I hate to deliever stupid fanboy-rants in threads like this: To each his own; Cheers; Live Long and Prosper!

those look digital to me, the first one even looks like the brush filters on photoshop.

if they're not.. then well done.

but either way... people shouldn't be dissing digital art. it can be pretty fantastic

It really just looks like photos that have been filtered in select areas. It just seems like a huge waste of time.
I mean they're literally just copying something instead of trying to make something new; especially when their copied piece looks like nothing came from them.

They're not simply done for "copying" and showing off. They're primarily done for studying light and how it interacts with other objects, namely skin. Skin is one of the most difficult things to paint and still achieve realism.

And these are done by one of the best living artists, especially when dealing with light.

And movies shot and projected on digital shouldn't be called films.

It is a bit of a holdover term but they use the word "painting" to differentiate from simply drawing digitally. Digital painting replicates a lot of the skills necessary with traditional painting with layering and blending and such but with a wider variety of brushes and colors available.

Especially if you use Corel Painter.
