at that point, by phase 4, RDJ will probably be a little bit too old

Nothing's official. We're just piecing together what we see in the trailers and set photos. James Badge Dale (Coldblood) is seen in dress uniform on board Air Force One when it gets attacked (he's the one looking out the window as "Iron Man" attacks --- still don't know if that's a drone, sentient armor, someone else in the suit, or Tony just getting his armor hacked); and a lot of us are pretty convinced that Ashley Hamilton is the white guy seen on set in the IP armor.

As much as I love RDJ, I don't see him him returning to the role past Avengers 2.

IM4 will most certainly be a reboot of sorts for the IM franchise, w/ a new cast.

As just stated, RDJ is getting up there in age, not to mention IM3 is the last film in his contract and Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Paul Bettany, and Jon Favreau probably were/are on a film to film basis anyways, particularly beyond IM3.

RDJ gets better looking with age. he could and should play tony stark for a while. plus, his character is the least impacted by age in a negative sense because the iron man suit is cgi and completely covers the actor inside.

id take a 55 year old RDJ over any 40 year old alternative any day

I think RDJ will be back for Avengers 2. I also think that He will be back for Avengers 3. And that will be it. After Avengers 2, I think he will have an anticipated, last film. and I'll tell ya, when Robert has his last film, it's gunna bring a tear to my eye

If the IM3 prequel comic is canon, then WM Mk II did.

IP might actually be a separate armor rather than a repainted WM.

Honestly, I would love for RDJ to stay on, however, stay on in a role similar to what Fury has now. And then maybe, another character can take presidence as the face of the MCU, as far as the solo films go.

Maybe something happens to Fury and Tony takes over as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
