I'd like to see Ang's take as well after Life of Pi, but he's most likely done with comic book adaptations. Someone like Gilliam is intruiging, but I'd be more excited for that about 15 years ago. I'm not as big a fan of Del Toro as others are. I like the Jodorowsky reference and throw in some Roman Polanski creep.
I vote for horror suspense. Last edited by SoNicRaDiATioN; 01-25-2013 at 11:19 PM. |

I think I read that Ang Lee regreted his take on the Hulk. He said it was too bleak.
So maybe he'd be willing to do a more comic book friendly superhero movie.

Possibly, but I think the disappointment of Hulk in how it was recieved and performed left a sour taste for him. Even though he's a world class filmmaker you know there would be some backlash if he were hired.

The world of Harry Potter is rather mundane and regimented. Magic is bound up by rules and regulations, while witches and warlocks wear gowns and mortar boards like Oxford dons. That is the polar opposite of the chaotic, mystical universe Doctor Strange inhabits. Maybe Yates can make the transition and adapt the outre visions created by Lee & Ditko for the film, but it would be a stretch, IMO.

The director would have to literally hyped up on weed, heroine, crack, or meth to properly make a Dr. Strange film. You can't tell me Ditko wasn't on something when he came up with the ideas for Strange...and a lot of the other characters for that matter, but Strange especially.

Could you imagine the uproar? It'd be the same with Ang Lee directing ANY marvel film from here on out. He's persona non grata....forever.

Guillermo Del Toro
Alfonso Cuaron Terry Gilliam I'd die of excitement if one of those 3 were chosen for this movie. Dr. Strange needs someone with a wild and vivid imagination at the helm.

Yeap, I agree, If they're ever going to go even a little 'dark' this would be the movie to do it with.

Who cares about Fan Anger lol? Fans were angered about Craig as Bond, Keaton as Batman and Heath as Joker etc...
I say Fan Anger is good ![]()

So you'd be ok with Joel directing another DC film then?

I think the upcoming film Beautiful Creatures, directed by Richard LaGravenese, has the right dark magic look for a Dr. Strange movie.

No, he's too old. But Ang Lee is a world class director at the top of his game right now. We should be lucky if he considered going back to the superhero movie game and direct a film like Dr. Strange (one of my favorite superhero btw.)
But relax, unfortunately that's probably not going to happen.

I think Marvel Studios tend to avoid 'auteur' directors. I can't see Del Toro, Cuaron, Gilliam being approached. The same way that Speilberg, Jackson or Tarrantino wouldn't be approached. MS just want that extra level of control that other studios and producers don't have.
Sure other studios like to have a lot of control and imput but they also want a lot of creative imput from their directors - thats why they go after certain individuals - because they have a story to tell and know who they feel could do it just. Marvel is a brand with big characters. It's more of a toybox that directors are allowed to play with for a film or two and then its time to move on. MS, because of this brand and also because they are creating a cohesive universe, can't allow directors to have a lot of freedom. So when considering a Dr Strange film first and foremost MS will ask 'does it fit'? Will it work with what else is going on? They certainly took that approach to the genres of phase one. Thor wasn't an epic fantasy, CA:FA wasn't a war film Hulk wasn't a psychological horror flick. They are all science fiction films with an action/adventure tone. Comic book movies basically. |

The producers of the Bond film also avoided "auteur directors" up until Mendes. I really liked Skyfall (not to say i don't like some previous Bond films as well.) I hope Marvel tries something along those lines at some point.

Marvel Studios likes directors who are team players. Auteur directors all too often aren't. Personally, I think they have the right idea.

Also I've never read a Strange comic but I remember watching the animated movie and while it had a few things it needed to fix it was a pretty good movie I think if they could find a way to translate that weird occult feeling you get from it into a PG-13 movie that would be great because let's face it it's going to have to be PG-13, they could do a dark fantasy, action/adventure with a touch of suspense and a feeling of "wow that's some of the weirdest **** I've ever seen in a comic book movie" |

Edgar Wright and James Gunn definitely have more idiosyncratic tendencies in their work then the filmmakers Marvel has hired in the past. This is a good sign. I think as the MCU becomes more well rounded in the coming years, Marvel will open up the playbook for directors more (as we already see with these hires).

as long as they don't OVER EXPLAIN the magik I'm fine with any kind of fantasy style, but, I'd swing the Hellboy type look I think with a touch of Ditko magics
