Dredd screenwriter Alex Garland gives a pretty explicit interview in which he addresses the accusations he ripped off the The Raid on Youtube.

Basically he says he wrote Dredd before The Raid back in 2009 and film journalists should know better to accuse him knowing how long it takes for a movie to go from development to pre-production to production and to post production.

He says if he was influenced by anything it was the original John Carpenter Assualt On Precinct 13.

Garland said in the Judge Dredd comics there are two types of stories the day in the life ones that go on for a few issues and the big sweeping epics that last half a year. Garland tried writing a the big sweeping epic with the Dark Judges but it didn't work because they are supernatural riffs on Judge Dredd and his world. Audiences would need knowledge of the character and his world for it to work so the storyline would better suit a sequel.

Funny thing is I saw both movies but got different vibes from both of them. The Raid still tops in terms of fight choreography and the novelty that it comes from Indonesia which isn't known for such intense action flicks and that there was Mad Dog.

Dredd is more of a hard sci-fi reboot and true enough, the whole cops stuck in enemy territory concept has been done prior to either movie so I didn't immediately make the link until you guys mentioned it.

I think the Dark Judges could be done..."Nolan" style. In Dredd we see that there are tame Judges on the take. Maybe Dark Judges could be Judges pushed to the extremes deciding the Law needs be more harsh.

Speaking of soundtracks, Normand Corbeil ended his battle with Cancer. Those not familiar with his stuff should really check out the Heavy Rain soundtrack. Those not familiar with Heavy Rain should just ignore the game exists and listen to the music and imagine your own story.

I liked Heavy Rain, but I also never went back and played it past my first time to see how the story could branch off. It's just a tough game to get through after a while.
