The Plummeting Enterprise - What's going on?

So as can be seen in this screenshot, the trailer features the 1701 plummeting to the earth.

Is it just me or does this not really seem like something JJ would have featured in a superbowl spot whole sale.

I'm thinking either the Enterprise somehow survives this crash, or, more intriguingly, that it is not Kirk's ship at all.

Now clearly it is the Enterprise 1701, but is it really the current one?

Allow me to explain,

In the Countdown to Darkness comic, the official lead up/ prequel story to the new film, Kirk and Spock encounter a formerly non-cannon character who claims to have been the captain of the enterprise: Robert April!

I'm likely to be wrong, but I think the ship we see in the trailer is a flashback to the destruction of this man's ship.

What are your thoughts?

I really think that Sulu will get the Big Girl out of the fall some how.

As for the ship that hits the bay, that definitely can't be the Enterprise. The Nacelles are too far apart and the proportions are wrong.

Also, the thing crashing into the buildings at the end most definitely isn't the Enterprise either. What ever it is, the saucer is too flat. It can either be the ship that crashes into the bay or a piece of the space dock, which probably also got blown up and sent a dozen ships hurdling towards Earth.

In prime universe, April was first captain of Kirk's Enterprise. That is the whole point. It would make no sense for him to be captain of another ship named Enterprise. Either April is from an alternate universe or, more likely, the comic will establish some event where April was posted as Captain of the Enterprise during its construction, only to replaced by Pike before launch for some unknown reason. The end result probably being that April has some sort of chip on his shoulder. Star Trek canon has long established that Starfleet captains often take command of their ships prior to the completion of construction.

Moreover, there is no way that is a flashback. When the Enterprise is launched in Star Trek 09, it is clear that the Constitution class is a new design as it is portrayed in the prime universe. There is no way there was a previous Constitution-class Enterprise, especially one with the registry NCC-1701.

I really wonder if that'll be a plot point in the film, since the film seems to focus on the John Harrison character more.

that would explain why the ship comes out of the water later. Maybe they had to repair it underwater after the crash

That shot of the Enterprise rising out of the water actually happens near the beginning of the film on Nibiru.
The Enterprise is seen hiding underwater during the 9 minute preview with The Hobbit.

Yeah, who knows if April actually plays any role in the film itself. I was just giving what I think are far more plausible explanations for April's line in the comic than redhawk's strange theories.

The comic drawing is drawn to look very much like actor Nolan North who is known to be in the film.
