Well, it has to be changed. They're not going back in time to 2006. They're going back in time to 1973. The events of the original trilogy will most definitely be altered.

when many of us say "X4" were are not saying a direct sequel to Last Stand. Its just the concept: A sequel set in present time, with the full original cast, or most of them.
Whatever the timeline is, or the supposed year of the events, it would be like an X4. And of course, they wouldnt name it X-Men 4. Last Stand wasnt X-men 3. Thats not the point of the the discussion we have been having all this months. so lets hope the number "4" isnt a factor for upcoming weeks, lol |

The present is up in the air now & whatever it ends up being in the conclusion of Days of Future Past, I can't see the studio choosing to follow up on that instead of making a sequel starring the 1973 cast. |

Cyclops death was never actually shown on screen. It's perfectly acceptable that it could be explained away, if they wanted to.
It's funny because Cyclops is doing so well in the comics ATM but we've still never seen him properly on film. |

the thing is, with Marvel creating a shared universe set in present time, and Warner doing the same in the near future, I highly doubt wont do the same, and just stick in the past for the rest of this decade. As many fans have said many times on the board or any other site out there, the most famous characters are Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, Rogue, Iceman, Gambit, Beast....... but Fox cant use them in the past, so thats why they are probably tempted to move to the present sooner rather than later. |

Also if you're going by the comics...when Kitty returned to the future she found that nothing had changed. This has already been discussed before...but these films take a lot of liberties when adapting the stories that inspired them. I do not expect a very close adaption. That being said there is already one big difference between the comics and what has been described...or many people are assuming what will happen in the film. In the comics the "past" was our present. What many people think will happen is that the catastrophic will take place in the 70's since it was said that the majority of the film would take place in the 70's. So how does this event that has already happened in the past (because it is part of our past) impact our world 30+ years later? My guess is that the time traveler is the culprit and their actions change the future. |

The new present is not the present at the end of X3 or Days of Future Past. That's why it makes a sequel starring that ensemble highly unlikely and nonsensical. |

Days of Future Past at the end of the day is still First Class 2. The next X-Men film will most probably continue the story of the 1973 ensemble. |

from a studio point of view, that would be to kill your big franchise. Do you really think Fox would want to kill the present world of the x-men to just do a sequel set in the 80's and then keep moving just with spin-offs? which studio would want that? |

People complain all the time about Storm, Cylclops, Iceman and Rogue. If they rebooted them or erased part of their histroy in an Alt timeline whats really to be missed? Those characters can all do more anyways. IN all honesty those characters sell regardless of who plays them or what little has been developed with them 10 years ago. Fox knows they have dropped the ball. DOFP is clean up to get back on track and start fresh, while not screwing over fans of the original. |

There are two franchises: Wolverine & the X-Men. Days of Future Past is the second film in this new franchise. First Class was the first. There will be a third and yes it will be set either in the 70s or 80s. The franchise that starred Jackman, McKellen & Stewart is done. The only reason we get to see that expired ensemble once more is that its pivotal to the story Days of Future Past is trying to tell. The studio isn't killing their new franchise by letting go of the old one. They're using the old one in this film to sell the new one. First Class didn't do well at the box office. Days of Future Past probably will and the third film down the line probably will too. |

With the timeline being readjusted in Days of Future Past, the chances of an "X4" went from possible to highly unlikely. "We get to bring both casts back together… I’m taking into account every movie – I’m not just grabbing my first two movies and First Class and smashing them together. I’m taking into account the entire universe as it’s been laid out so far on the screen, and really respecting it and trying to work with that. People took things in various directions, so there’s some clean-up. But ultimately I’m not just ignoring them either. We’ve cracked it in a way that it makes sense. I had a two-hour conversation with James Cameron about time travel, string theory, multiverses and all that. You have to create your rules and stick with them. That’s why Terminator and Back To The Future work so well. And there are certain mechanisms in X-Men, certain powers, perceptions and characters, that make this possible." You don't do Star Trek VII starring Nimoy & Shatner when you have Star Trek Into Darkness starring Pine & Cumberbatch coming out soon. Its the same with the new X-Men series. The next film will continue the story of McAvoy's X-Men & their battles with Fassbender's Brotherhood. You don't make a sequel about characters who's history & adventures in the series exist now only in alternate timelines. |

I don't see why they wouldn't make movies from both timelines.

I tired of waiting for X-men movies, we need a X-men TV show, like shield.
It should be called Xavier. The show should be about all mutants from around the world that attend Xavier school for the gifted. That would be awesome. |

It would be awesome. Marvel Studios has the rights to TV shows for the X-Men, I think. I don't think Fox has the TV rights.

I believe all they sold were movie rights, but the thing is they don't have the rights to use movie characters in a live action tv show, which would create complications.

stupid would be to lost the chance to make a huge boxoffice with full original cast back.
The FC cast can do sequels anytime, right after DOFP or some years later, since the age factor would be positive. |
