3 Reasons "Days Of Future Past" Is Actually X4

My Hype friend Angamb made a post today in another thread based on a tweet he saw from Lauren S. Donner:

Lauren's twitter posts are protected so I can't confirm visually anything beyond what Angamb posted. But naturally, many may assume that she's referring to a film coming out after Days Of Future Past. But I believe it's a strong possibility that she's giving us foresight into the studio's position on this franchise. And as each day passes, and more details emerge about this production, I'm beginning to seriously believe X-Men: Days Of Future Past IS the long-awaited X4. Now before you go "Naaaah", just think about it for a second. There are at least 3 reasons to believe that we're already looking at X4 being produced now:

1.) Return To Form: This film is obviously picking up after X3. And Bryan Singer is picking up with it. This film will feature original franchise actors we've not seen together on screen since 2006's Last Stand. And they will be reunited with the director who assembled them as a cast. For FOX, this franchise is returning to all the ingredients that made it superior in the first place.

3.) Timing: The idea that the studio would wait to see how Days Of Future Past performs to bring back the original actors for a future X4 is a stretch. It's already been 7 years since The Last Stand. The original actors are getting older and moving on to other projects, etc.

4.) Killer Robts: The Sentinels were hinted at in X3, as the team "practiced" for battle in a simulation. However now these beings will be part of a major storyline feature of this film. It's a natural evolution--and again an expansion of the previous sequel.

The above being stated, I strongly believe that X-Men Days Of Future Past is nothing more than a working title just like X-Men: The Last Stand. I also think this may be the final send-off to a great cast--a send-off they never got properly with Last Stand.

I'm not even sure if DOFP is X4 since the original cast is sharing the film with the cast of First Class and people are assuming that this is a sequel to FC. But if the original cast has more screentime than FC cast, I could this see movie being as X4.

Plus they have to bring back at the opening element that they had for X1 to X3. So this film would feel like X-Men 4.

And I hope if this really X-Men 4, there's going to be X5 and X6!!!

thanks for creating the topic, lightning, I think the issue deserved it.

but back on topic, we all know that Fox wants to create a shared universe just like Marvel. So... even if Fox dont create a crossover between F4 and x-men, they would need x-men movies set in present.

so do you really think Fox would release X-Force in the near future, instead of 'X4' with the whole original cast? when the general audience knows perfectly that cast?

lets be honest guys, a x-men sequel with Hugh, James, Anna, Halle, Ellen, Alan, and even Taylor Kitsch, with Shawn, Daniel and some more would SELL. easily.

They are the core x-men. Those are the x-men the audience misses. Those are the x-men from the animated series.

We cant deny its potential. Specially if Singer is directing, and he brings his A-game with the action scenes and the power of each x-man.

X4 with the full cast more the current special effects would be Epic. Lauren probably feels the same, and thats why there is a X4 treatment with X5 connections.

Singer loves this franchise, and the original cast. we love the characters....

I doubt that a movie featuring the original cast that follows DOFP would be called X4 (it wouldn't make sense), but I do believe there will be such a movie.

Last Stand wasnt called X3. Its just the concept, a fourth movie with the original cast.

They don't even have to name it as "X-Men 4". Look at X-Men: The Last Stand, the title didn't have "X3" or "X-Men 3" but we all know its X-Men 3.

What I should have said was that another movie with the OT cast shouldn't be referred to as X4 (just as X-Men United was referred to as X2 or X-Men The Last Stand was referred to as X3). X4 would denote that it follows from X3, but it wouldn't, it would follow from DOFP (FC2 for FC and X4 for X3). So, if there is another movie with the OT cast, it'll probably take a second title, such as X-Men: Phalanx Covenant (God forbid), but technically, it would be X5.

Exactly, X5 will be whatever then next one is. Not X4.

Of course. Im stoked about all things X men related. But I want some new characters and rosters soon.

This movie is the one that Im excited for cause they actually did bring everyone back, they are gonna have to do more next time to grab my attention like they did here. Wont be a surprise to anyone that they would want Singer back if its a hit and that he wants to continue with the same exact characters after DOFP. Thats all they have done in this universe.

If they want to continue X-Men movies in the present time, I'd like to see new characters and villains. Not same old same old. Not because I dislike the old cast all of a sudden, but I just think that everything has a shelf life, and no matter how underwhelming X3 was it still felt like a natural wrap-up for all those characters and their stories.

I also don't get the idea how anything can follow from DoFP, unless they plan more movies in the apocalyptic future. The whole idea is that the future we see in that movie does not exist.

Considering the majority of Days of Future Past is supposed to take place in 1973, sharing screentime with the First Class cast, and given Shuler-Donner's alleged comments that she is still trying to get X-Men 4 off the ground, no, I don't consider this X-Men 4.

This is hurting my brain a bit.

I looks at it this way whether Fox wants it to be a true sequel to X-Men The Last Stand or a sequel to X-Men FC is beyond the point now, just look at how the Star Trek films stopped with the roman numerals after ST 6 and called the next one Star Trek Generations with the cast of ST:TNG.

They didn't call it Star Trek VII: The Next Generation since the audience was fine with the just three of the original ST cast appearing and they would know it's a natural transition.

My brain is hurting again.

Something I don't understand, if it's to take place in the 70's then are the X-Men from FC going to the timeline of the OT cast? is that when the DOFP assassination take place, or is the assassination taking place even further into the future where the Earth is corrupted?

If the "Future" aspect take place even one day after the events of X3, wouldn't that automatically make this a sequel to that film? The "Past" events have no bearing on this if the travelers are going back to prevent an eventuality that takes place after X-Men: The Last Stand.

The very fact that we are even seeing the original cast again in this upcoming film officially makes it a sequel. It's not a reboot. It's not a prequel. So what does that leave us?

I would be very happy. They should have released a X-Men 4 movie few years ago. I just want them to continue the original series.

I have said all along Days of future Past Is both X4 and first Class 2.Days of future past
should be viewed as sequel to all X-Men films.

Its a bit different, FC was a prequel to already established characters in X1. FC just exists to tie into X1 and show us how they started. Its the same characters meeting eachother. Not different ones meeting together from their own movies.

I hate to say it but...I honestly think this will be the last time we see the First Class cast. There is only so far they can take the prequel approach, much like the Star Wars films. FC played an important role in refreshing interest in this franchise, but its job is done. It created a bridge to what is happening now. But I've never believed that Fox intended on making a whole series with the FC cast; it was always about bringing it back to front and center with the classic X-Men. This Days Of Future Past will be the first foray into that.

After this film drops, I 100% expect Fox to retire everything and everyone we associate with this franchise and start over completely with a real reboot with new actors, storylines, etc. Kinda like what Marvel/Sony did with The Amazing Spider-Man after the Tobey McGuire films reached their peak. The shelf life for this particular X-Men cast is nearing its expiration date. This 2014 film is about wrapping up all the loose ends, which explains why Fox is pursuing James Marsden for a role in the project as well. I think they want to send this thing off big and proper-like for the fans and to open up the doors for something bigger to challenge the success of what Marvel Studios is enjoying right now.

I don't think they are gonna reboot this film series after DOFP is released to the theaters. There are so many things that they can do with this series. I don't think FOX is the type of studio that would let their franchise end in a high note. And this is not even an adaptation to a book series like Harry Potter and Twilight. They are gonna make more X-Men movies as long as they want to, as long as people are willing to buy tickets and as long as none of the X-Men movies bombed at the box-office.

There Is almost no way James marsden will be In DOFP since all films are Cannon.

Spider-Man could have continued with new people contuning the contunity.

The rapid MS/Disney fans will never support anything Fox does.

By that logic, it might as well leave you with X-Men 5, while The Wolverine that takes places after The Last Stand and leads into Days of Future Past is X-Men 4.
