I don't know anyone. My mom moved us out of London when I was 4 and I grew up in a little town in the country. Which would have been great if I'd grown up wanting to be a farmer, but honestly I wish she'd stayed in the city. I'd probably be a lot further along in my career by now!

I'm 25, and since I have no luck either, I figure I gotta start trying to make stuff happen somehow.

You don't have to know anyone now, either. Join some professional associations. You definitely meet people in your field that way! I have a friend trying to break into entertainment law. She doesn't have any friends or relatives already in the field, so she joined the local association and is making contacts. You really do have to be interested in mutually-beneficial relationships though. "You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours." Not "You there! Scratch my back and then I'll forget what you did for me!"

Another method is letting your friends and family (and all their friends) know what you're looking for. I got two ongoing paid gigs because two acquaintances (a friend of a friend, and a classmate) could no longer hold certain freelancing obligations, thought I'd be suitable, and referred me. Turns out I was very suitable indeed, and now command a higher rate than my original referrers did. It doesn't have to be a weekly email begging for a job. Just letting people know what you're generally up to can be enough. One of my gigs is updating a website for someone (and I talked him into redesigning it, for a fee ) , and I was literally the only designer the referrer knew who could read even basic HTML.



Oh yeah, this is the hate thread. I hate how my fiancé is in such pain from his broken wrist. It's a small break, but it's causing such agony!

Also, the hospital he went to has only paid parking. Kick us while we're down, why don't you!

I'm sure I'll have much more to gripe about once we receive the bill for the ER.

I hate that on Monday night, i got hit by a car. My glasses broke and my phone broke when the car hit me. My body is still a little damaged from the hit. That car hit me really hard. But thank god im ok.

...wow...(sigh) no, and i know that was my mistake. I should of got his info but it happened so fast i wasent thinking. I guess im just a good guy and i dont go crazy,you know. I hate this story about the golfer who was supposedly bitten by a black widow in Australia, and then supposedly lanced out the "deadly poison" with a golf tee, potentially saving her own life.

It's a load of ********.

First of all, they described the spider as "furry." Black widows aren't "furry," nor do they live in Australia.

Secondly, the venom of a black widow is only deadly on very, VERY rare occasion, and fatalities normally only occur in very elderly or in very young victims.

Thirdly, these spiders are not poisonous, they're venomous. They inject venom.

Fourthly, it's widely known that the whole "cutting yourself open and sucking/squeezing out the venom" technique is absurdly ineffective. The blood moving through the exposed vessels is moving at incredibly high velocity. The venom was already transported away from the site of injection, as evidenced by the rapid swelling that was observed.

Finally, the clear fluid she squeezed out of her self-inflicted wound was more than likely the result of her body's reaction to the venom (and was probably responsible for the swelling) rather than the venom itself, which was obviously already acting, and which would in all likelihood amount to a tiny fraction of a drop.

I hate scientific illiteracy in the media. Huge pet peeve.
