At Penn State it might. If the football program sucks for long enough public interest in the football program will wane, along with its influence over the school.

When your football program is responsible for bringing in nearly $60 million in profit per year for the institution; as well as countless millions for local and state businesses, the chances of long-term interest in the program waning are practically zero.

While the team will suffer in the near future because of recruitment losses, I don't think interest in the team will wane. Hell, there are already large groups (including key alumni and trustees) who are fostering an "us versus the world" mentality.

That's all true for now, but should PSU football suck for the next 10 or 20 years, profits and public interest are going to plummet. People may well transfer their affection to a new sport. Maybe someday Penn State will be a basketball school.

Maybe at first, but he's already pretty old, so after a few years he'll likely spend the rest of his life in the hospital prison ward, which is more comfort than he deserves.

I've read bits and pieces. It seems to me that the biased investigator, hired by the family is just accusing the Freeh Report of being biased (while providing little evidence to back that up).

Yes, it's really just an attempt by the family to clear his name.

The real issue isn't so much if Paterno/Penn did what was required of them by law, but that they didn't do enough morally. I.e. the law could have done more if they did as well. So the best that Paterno defenders can do is find a loophole to hide behind. And if they do...sorry but everyone can still see you.

His son states that his father didn't know about the investigation in 1998 and states that it would have been illegal to discuss the investigation. I just don't think with his stature that he would be unaware that Sandusky was at least being investigated by the police.

So in 1998 ,when the university police launched an investigation into Sandusky, leading to his resignation shortly thereafter, Paterno knew nothing about it? That's akin to a company's CEO not knowing about a tax audit on one of its accounts.

There would have to be some sort of conspiracy undertaken specifically to conceal its very existence from Paterno.

If the Freeh Report is true, Paterno was in the know and thought the integrity and name of Penn State was more important than the children who's lives are ruined and turned a blind eye to Sandusky.

If the Paterno Report is true, Paterno is a naive, incompetent man, who didn't know what to do and decided to do the littlest amount of effort required.

Either way, neither paints his legacy in a positive light.

What's least likely is that Paterno was somehow naive and incompetent in that single instant. "Wasn't me.", basically.

If Paterno was somehow ignorant to the situation, it's because he specifically chose to be.

What I thought was funny is when I saw Jay Paterno talking to Skip Baseless and Stephen A Smith was he said that Sandusky and his dad didn't get along when he retired. I wonder why Jay?

Frankly, I don't buy that for a second. For example, this was Paterno's first public appearance following his firing (when students gathered outside of his house in support):

However, in his deposition, Paterno was reportedly very well-spoken, coherent and even combative.

Paterno was able to turn it on and off at the drop of a dime. When it was convenient for him, he was the confused, kindly old man who just didn't know what was going on. But this was an Ivy League educated man who was as sharp as a tack until the day he died. Paterno knew exactly what was going on and his family is simply making his legacy worse by trying to cover up his complicity.
