He was already talking about making sequels set in 70s and 80s at the time First Class was released. There was already talk of the movie being more ambitious when he was still attached as the director. I can't imagine that the whole idea for the movie changed that radically after the script was already written.

Did he write the script though? Kinberg was hired to write it really early on and I don't remember hearing anything about Vaughn working on it. I'm not sure he even had a chance to sit down with it before he fled the project and Singer replaced him. Singer and Kinberg had a decent amount of time to work on the script and were still touching it up quite recently, so I'm nervous about how many (IF any) of Vaughn's potential contributions were left in.

The last ideas I remember hearing from Vaughn was something about the JFK assassination and "adding only one new character", both things that seem quite incongruous with the 11 year leap, let alone the DOFP storyline. If you have any links to articles with additional info I'd love to read them!

Well, there were no interviews with Vaughn himself. This wikipedia article however credits him, Jane Goldman and Kinberg with writing:

There's also this interview with Kinberg where he specifically mentions working closely on the script with Goldman and Vaughn, and calls the movie more "mythic and epic":

And as far as I know he's still attached as the producer for the film, which I don't think would have been the case if he just absolutely hated the direction it was taking.

So I think it's entirely possible that Vaughn was also not interested in a straight sequel to First Class and had a bigger ambition.

Vaughn wrote a treatment to his version of XFC2, which at the time was not even certain to even materialize. I think it is probably the same as how XO Magneto became XFC.

I think it had to do with him almost being hired as Star Wars director, so he stepped down and decide to keep producer role. I dont think they want to repeat the last stand situation with Bryan leaving so sudden.

I think this is the first time for any X-men movie that filming started over a year before the movie opens ?

And seriously if the line-up for X4 is like this:
Wolverine
Cyclops (assuming Bryan Singer resurrected him at the end of DOFP)
Storm
Jean (just like Cyke)
Rogue
Iceman
Shadowcat
Colossus (the usual small role)
Angel
Psylocke

And the villains are Apocalypse and his minions. There's no doubt it would be more successful than a First Class sequel that might consists of Young Prof X, Young Magneto, Mystique, Beast, Young Cyke, Young Jean and Young Storm. Even if they have Apocalypse and Mr. Sinister as the villains. I don't think they could easily rival the star power of the original series. If I was the head of FOX or one of the producers, I would really suggest that they develop and move forward with their stronger and more marketable series.

Needs more Beast. Maybe some Gambit. But that's close to the film I've been waiting my whole life for.

But DoFP will be a unique film event itself. Can't believe how ambitious it is really.

yes, thats what excites me about the future.

This is Fox's very first ambitious x-men movie, so if we assume it will have a great impact, I wonder that will be their next ambitious movie of the franchise.

Cyclops, Gambit, Rogue, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Storm, Iceman and co. all fighting together?

Id pay $100 to watch that on the theatre

But a wet dream can be anything. Pretty much like Megan Fox, Jessica Alba, and Scarlett Johansen having a lez-be-honest.. tryst and asking you to join in. But in real life live action and in 3D!

Well since we don't know what the future will bring best to disucss more plausable things for DOFP.Especilly since next X-Men film after DOFP will be at least 2016.

They will have plenty In DOFP to keep people talking.

Indeed it is! I think we should have a clearer idea by the time of the closing credits of DoFP, as that should indicate how the land lies, which characters have been set up for a future appearance, which films/events have been erased/altered and which are the main characters left standing.

This is a lot more positive rather than people whining & being worried. If I remember correctly all the fun of X3 came in anticipating & speculating rather than the final product.

I also keep wondering if one possibility for Peter Dinklage's character is Madison Jeffries, the mutant who could communicate with machines and developed robots. He was involved with the Weapon X program among other things and in the Weapon X: Days of Future Now storyline, his robots took on a life of their own, with one of them calling itself Master Mold.

That would still be a gamble, splitting the X-Men into two teams/movies just so some of the characters would shine. That would be like Iron Man leading the "New Avengers" movie and letting Captain America be the #1 star of the next Avengers movie.

How is that a gamble? Better then shoving them all in one film. No one has been happy with the time given to characters given with one team. They need to break them up to add more. Other teams exist from the source its not like they are making up this idea or anything. They have their own stories.
