I wonder if we'll have "big bads" to center each season around. That worked well for buffy and angel. Hydra would be a cool way to start. That would help establish that they're still around for fans who have seen the movies but not read that books.

I definitely think we will see SHIELD battle against lower level Hydra forces, AIM, and various members of the criminal underground. I thought it would be especially cool if there was a bit of a competition between rival organizations as they try to track down some of the Chitauri weaponry.

As long as the universe it inhabits resembles the MCU, and you can tell superpowers are a part of it, I'm okay with it. If it's just Homeland or 24 by any other name, and the villains are all generic terrorists, drug lords, jewel thieves and serial killers, then I truly believe it's dead in the water before it starts and will not find an audience, neither among fanboys nor general Nielsen audiences. "Super(villain or hero) du jour" in an almost anthology-like setting, X-Files style, works; mundane agents vs. mundane crooks doesn't.

*That's* all I'm worried about. Is it okay for me to worry about *that,* folks? Or does somebody want to start Cherokee-Bashing Round 2?
It's okay... but you won't find much sympathy when Whedon specifically said "it's not about crime." So it's hard to really understand why you would worry about it being about crime. The core issue may be that there is a lot of room between mundane crooks and supervillains du jour, and you seem to see it as either or... either it's costumes AND super powers AND super items AND supervillain storylines... or NONE of the above. That's not really reasonable, imho.

Other than the elements of the Marvel Universe that fall in that wide chasm (ie HYDRA, the Skrulls, neither supervillains nor normal crooks), Item 47 is probably a good example of what a SHIELD storyline might be. Something super happens. What do different types of people do with this? How does that cause problems, and how does SHIELD deal with it, physically *and* morally. If the show is not about crime (though most superhero things are), and the show is about being in a world where these super things happen, and the show will have spectacle and sci-fi elements, then, like a Fringe or a Star Trek we can expect many of the challenges they face to be deeper than "Stop this bad person this week" - maybe the problem turns out to be a good thing. Maybe the problem just can't be solved. Maybe it's all a big accident or misunderstanding. Sometimes there's not a person at the heart of the problem at all. That's sci-fi television. More about the people and the metaphors than beating the bad guys, whether they're from Latveria or Afghanistan.

And this not only holds true for the shows SHIELD has been compared to, not only for all the statements that have been made, but it also holds true for all of Joss Whedon's shows, through varying levels of involvement of himself, Ted and Maurissa.

Am I the only one thinking along these lines?

I am picturing something like the 4th season of Buffy or Angel when I picture what this show will look like. Likely, there will be many missions and villains/heroes being introduced in this show.

Elaborate, for those of us (just me?) who missed these 4th seasons...

Buffy season 4 dealt with a government organization that was created to destroy the types of threats the Scoobys dealt with, and in Angel seasons 1-4, he was paid to help people with problems of a mystical nature. I imagine SHIELD will be something similar to these shows, only dealing with villains and such.

Just to say, Roy Thomas, the creator of The Vision, said he approves of Coulson as Vision.

I still say the greatest comparison to what Shield may be is Fringe.

Certainly lots of "super" like events going on there

I'm thinking closer to Angel than to Buffy S4, considering the analogy with Buffy would position SHIELD as the bad guys, lol. Actually, I think it's been said before, but I'm imagining something closer to Angel S5, in which Angel & Co were backed by a huge organization and seemingly endless resources yet still struggled to keep the balance and maintain order. Of course, this organization won't be backed by the root of all evil, so ya know, there are differences, haha.

But I think that's also a hopeful prediction on my part because Angel S5 may be my favorite season of any show Joss has ever done, and it just happened to be run by Jeffrey Bell, who is now an EP on SHIELD.

I wouldn't mind Amanda Righetti showing up on SHIELD. She had a cameo at the end of CA:TFA. I'd like to see who her character is now.

Coulson will never be Vision. Coulson is kind of like his own special character now and Marvel won't change that. That's why they put him on Ultimate Spider-Man and brought him back for the SHIELD TV series.

agreed. Though, my gut has been telling me that there is probably something more to coulson than what has been revealed. Usually, my gut is pretty accurate with these type of things, as it told me the daytona 500 winner yesterday

Honestly, a lot of the characters and organizations from Fringe could be dropped into the MCU wholesale, and your average observer wouldn't realize they weren't superheroes or supervillains. . .

They had a forum for Wonder Woman when it was still filming its pilot. Who knows with SHH.

And look how that turned out, lol. Doesn't surprise me that they'd wait a little longer from now on. At least until the pilot has an actual air date, I'd imagine.

There was also a forum for Justice League before Ant-Man and Fantastic Four, despite the fact that the latter two have firm release dates and JL does not. It seems to hinge on which film/show seems to have the most fans here.

I wonder what the effects budget is. Skimping in that area could be detrimental to the show, though I expect that Disney/Marvel have enough in-house expertise to make it look good.

Other shows sometimes haven't fared very well in this area. NBC slashed the budgets on Heroes to the bone, which resulted in the writers/producers having to cut major sequences and alter plots. The season one finale had most of the planned effects sequences cut, which severely impacted the episode. I'd hate to see SHIELD get short shrift like that.
