I don't have a problem that they exist, but if Microsoft wants to subsidize their premium service with ads, then it should cost less for the end user. Have it be like an opt-in thing. "Don't mind looking at ads? Check this box and we'll take $15 off your yearly subscription."

If people get to save $15 and get a lol out of ads like this...

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:

I think they'd lose a lot of money.

I never even glance at the ads. I will never understand people who get up in arms about them.

I can't imagine why they would cut ads out from a gold subscription which is a ostensibly a person with disposable income so that they could advertise to people who either are unable or are unwilling to part with their money. That would defeat the purpose of advertisements.

haha no just no. Its one box of like 10 on the screen. Its not bugging anyone, its not intrusive, it doesnt even make noise. Most of the time they're for games anyways. Unbelievable how gamers always believe they're entitled to everything in the world

Did anyone buy Sim City. I know 1 friend who really liked the game and didn't have issues but otherwise it seems like quite a bad situation.

It's brand has been damaged though, just like Diablo. You'll see it when the sequel comes out.

I was just going to post about it. EA, once again, should be ashamed of themselves for trying implement a broken system that aims to screw over the consumer in an unsuccessful attempt at beating piracy. Always online DRM isn't the way to go. In a perfect world with perfectly working internet everywhere it would be, but obviously that's not the case.

Maxis' apology is phenomenal. They seem sincere, they're completely blunt and funny. That is how everyone should do apologies

If PC users wouldnt steal games all willy nilly the way they do, DRM wouldnt be needed.

Frankly, I don't even think it works or makes a difference. If a game is going to be pirated, its going to be pirated. There doesn't seem to be a way to stop that and DRM doesn't deter that from happening. All it does is piss off the end user and alienate the ones, the publishers are trying to keep around. It sucks but it is what it is

Pretty much. If someone wants to pirate a game, they will be able to do it. No DRM is going to change that. The only ones suffering from this nonsense are the honest customers. If anything, I'd almost say that DRM pushes people towards piracy. Less of a hassle to install some cracks that let you play a game offline, than deal with unstable internet connections that might prevent you from playing.

I agree. I think I fall on the side of thinking that piracy is mostly a non-issue. People are going to pirate games, no amount of DRM will stop them, and you can't even say it's a lost sale because most of them wouldn't have bought it anyway. Either because they aren't able to, or because they just wouldn't be interested if they couldn't get it for free.

All draconian DRM methods do are hurt paying customers, give you lots of bad publicity, and turn people towards piracy.

You are aware that aggressive DRM actually causes MORE people to pirate a game? Spore was probably the first game (at least that I can recall) that had absurd DRM. You were limited to register the game 3 times. If you used them all you had to call EA, provide personal information and proof of purchase, and it was up to the discretion of the person you talked to whether you would even get more registrations and how many. Spore was pirated over 1.7 million times in 2008 because of this. The game got good reviews (though some people found it disappointing) but it hurt the brand so much, you'll probably never see a true sequel for it again. As others have said, draconian DRM only affects the people who legitimately purchased the game.

Pirating games isn't exclusive to PC either.

It's a miracle that a site like www.gog.com can survive then. Not only do they sell old games exclusively for PC, but they sell them without DRM.
