I don't think there's too much "innate human goodness" going on in The Dark Knight.

TDK was never about innate goodness.
It was about making the right choice, that every choice has a consequence. Hence the little lecture Alfred gives to Bruce: "Endure, Master Wayne. Take it. They'll hate you for it, but that's the point of Batman, he can be the outcast. He can make the choice that no one else can make, the right choice." It's not like the sugar coated films where there is some magical 3rd option that fixes the problem without any ramification *cough*Spider-Man 1, MJ and Tram scene*cough*. In other words, you can't have it both ways.

Actually, I do think TDK changed our awareness (at least, my awareness) of what a Post-Bush Era could've been like, and what a Post-9/11 World already was. There was a lot of deceit and treachery going on in the movie and in the world (it still is today), and I'd say TDK might be the first big summer movie that actually metaphorically showed how a society can be built on lies and corruption, and how it can get someone to be portrayed as a hero when the opposite is the case. It might even be the biggest example in summer films, period.
The sort of "gray areas" of the Joker, how I sort of "related" to his stance during the interrogation scene, actually had me wondering if The Joker is right. That's scary, but it's also the mark of fabulous writing. If a writer can actually make you see The Joker's point (of all people), there's amazing talent involved. Don't get me started on the cell phone hacking device.

Not much I guess!
But I think Obama is a Superman's fan instead. And speaking of Obama I saw him today on a myth buster's episode and since it was on a French channel "Z telé" I guess the original episode must have been aired quite some time ago. They were rechecking on that Archimedes myth that he supposedly put fire on some enemies’ navy war boats with mirrors back in the days. And eventually that myth failed again for the second time. I guess president Obama really believed in that myth... But! ! ! Wait a second there!.. I might no be the biggest myth buster fan out there even though I went to meet them a month ago when they came to Montréal and i missed them by a day ..lol. But sometimes I noticed they might make little mistakes in testing those myths. And perhaps there's hope for president Obama yet in believing in that Archimedes myth. Because I remember when I was a little kid back in my native country I used to put fire on papers, burn little insect and even burn little spot on my hands just to see how it feels. But it wasn't exactly with a mirror but rather with a magnifier. So I guess the myth will work with some huge magnifiers and it wouldn’t even take a lot of them maybe only one will be enough. I think perhaps the historians described the things as beings mirrors when in fact it was magnifiers.

You know, this thread seems funny now but if memory serves, when I first got here there were loads of threads just like this.
People would talk about this film like it could cure cancer, like it was the pinnacle of human achievement or something... and if you dared say anything even remotely negative about it then you were unquestionably a troll who was only doing so to stir up trouble or be deliberately contrary... I mean God forbid you just didn't think it was all that great... Thankfully, attitudes to it have returned to reasonable levels since, though... mostly.

I'm certainly not an Obama fan, but I still don't get this comparison.
The Joker's shtick is that he's an anarchist, and he loved chaos, mocking the illusion of control that bigots and desperate do-gooders scramble to maintain. Very much to the opposite, Obama is all about control. In fact, he's so overly controlling that it's hurting us. The only thing they have in common is their talent for lying, but in every other meaningful way they are completely different.

What far-left crap? Let's separate fact from opinion for a second:
fact: 1) torture has been used by the U.S. government under the Bush administration 2) torture was used as a campaign platform publicly by most of the Republican nominees for president (McCain notably absent) 3) fear of terrorism and being strong on national security was a primary campaign platform by Bush, with insistence by figures such as Dick Cheney that Al Qaeda wanted John Kerry to be elected, and that Democrats supported terrorists in principle. 4) there is a marked increase in movies portraying terrorism and using terrorists 5) the last Batman movie with the Joker never once used "terrorist" to describe him, even though his actions resulted in just as many deaths opinion: 1) Rational thought has not been important to American voters for a long time 2) Obama's message of hope is a direct extreme opposite to fear, and when used for its emotional value only, is the same thing: an irrational urge that is an attempt to escape fear. 3) The only way to handle fear reliably and triumph is to address it head on, recognize the actual problems to be solved and evaluate candidate plans to solve them. In other words, the issues matter more than the emotions. Do you see any mention of far-left ideals such as taking down corporations, re-distributing income, etc.? |

Ooooh wow.... making Obama look like the Joker! How edgy and kewl and daring... and edgy! Stick it to the man, maaaaaaan.
That's almost as dumb as the Bush/Hitler signs. And about as substantively devoid of anything resembling political reality as well. All that aside.... wasn't this hitting the rounds 3 years ago? Y'know... when TDK was actually a recent film. That's all you got? A tea-party meme from 2009? Sheesh, try better next time. |

Wow. This thread actually exists.
If you base who you vote for based on a fictional movie, I think it's time to get some fresh air. |

I just read through this thread. It was glorious. We had a 14 year old comparing The Dark Knight to Woodstock and the Bush administration to a true dictatorship.
One thing you will NEVER see is someone who lived through WWII comparing an American politician to Hitler. That is for people in their teens and 20s who have nothing else to say when criticizing Bush or Obama.

Saw this thread for the first time today.
Just thought for the sake of being in topic with this thread I saw Obama, Bigfoot, The Joker, and Abe Lincoln writing the script for Ghostbusters 3 today.
