It is a great theme but I still don't think it surpasses Williams'.

NOTHING will surpass Williams score.
That is going to be a major hurdle in judging Zimmers score objectively .
You cant compare it to Williams score, but people will reflexively.

It's very influenced by Williams too I would say.

A few years ago, some fan site (forget which one) did a retrospective (with mp3 files) on Superman music through the ages. The Williams theme (of course) was there. As well as: the 50s TV series, various cartoons, L&C and Smallville. And casually included among those was music from Superman Lives.

Say what?!!!

Now that movie was well into pre-production before it got cancelled. So it wasnt impossible that someone (Elfman?) might have composed a preliminary theme. But the mp3 was suspiciously complete and polished. That said as I listened to its choir and percussions, I could definitely imagine it for Superman.

Anyhoo, long story short, it turned out to be (no big surprise) fake. The music was actually from Backdraft.

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

Coincidentally, Hans Zimmer was the composer.

I wonder, would any of you guys be okay with a theme song for the movie? Spider-Man had Hero, Armageddon had the Aerosmith song, Titanic had My heart will go on...

Hans Zimmer has collaborated with singers on themes for Prince of Egypt, Spirit, Lion King, and the results have always been amazing, IMO. A theme song could be seen as corny for some, but I don't mind corny stuff. I'd love to see a MOS theme become a hit on the radio.

I wouldn't mind as long as it was an already existing classic rock song, and not some current song that will be forgotten about in a few months.

She was a fantastic composer indeed. Her music to The Flash TV show from the 90s is also excellent.

Her Flash tv show music was definitely great man. Sometimes she'd hit leitmotifs similar to it on Batman TAS and ones similar to what would eventually be Batman TAS on The Flash tv show. I remember the Superman: TAS episode in which The Flash appears the beginning part to one of her Flash intros from the tv show is played. She was truly a great, I have never heard anything of hers I didn't love.

Walker scored/orchestrated the music for The Flash; but Elfman wrote the theme.

Oh yeah, I know that, same for the original Batman: TAS opening, and both are great. Her music for the rest of the shows were also great is all.

Personally, I think Walker's original Batman theme that replaced Elfman's in the BTAS opening and was featured prominently in Mask of the Phantasm is the best Batman theme to date. It is so simple, yet so expressive - both tragic and heroic. It is Batman for me.

I absolutely love that theme. Although I DO love Danny Elfman's Batman theme though. I think they have always been neck and neck for me, but I have really been leaning towards Shirley's as of late.

Question: Anyone here familiar with John Powell's work? Didn't he work with Zimmer? Some of his stuff sounds Zimmer-esque, IMO. I caught some of How to Train Your Dragon the other day and heard his score, it is pretty good stuff. Anyway, if the MOS score sounds anything similar to that as far as epicness goes, I will be thrilled. It's got some Zimmer to it, IMO (<<< and I think I may have just coined a new term lol - good thing this isn't Food Network haha).

Oh yeah. I remember geeking out over that moment when that "Speed Demons" episode first aired. That theme was a secondary theme she used for the Flash on the live action TV show. It was cool to hear her re-use it for the animated version of the character on a Superman show at that. I'm glad La La Land Records released music for the 90s Flash TV show 3 years ago. If you don't own it pick it up I thinks it's still available. http://www.lalalandrecords.com/Flash.html
I wish they released more music from it. Hopefully the S:TAS music will get released soon as well.

Trust me you're telling this to somebody who knew this since the show first aired. Not to mention who happens to be an Elfman and Walker fan.

I agree. It's hard to pick between the two, imo. Elfman set the tone but Walker expanded on it and perfected it. So it's tough, but they both did Batman justice musically, imo.

I liked Powell's X3 and Hancock scores. I wouldn't mind if he'd scored MOS instead of Zimmer either, but it's too late for that now.

Powell would've conjured a good theme for Man of Steel. It'd have that 'modern' sound the studios like, but it'd still manage to be a superhero theme.

And since we're talking about Shirley's great work for the DCU animated series, she did a great job with Superman: The Animated Series. She spread the duties to her collaborators like she did with Batman, but I think they did an even better job with this series.

I posted the same link a few pages back but no replies .

It really is awesome. That guy does a great job emulating Zimmer's style but making it feel like Superman.
