Whatever the case, it's certainly not going to cripple the box office by any means but it probably cut millions from the bottom line for no reason whatsoever. I know the mindset of which I speak. Obviously, some people don't understand the full scope of the political landscape. I usually look past such things for the most part when I make my entertainment decisions but a lot of people don't.

Party affiliation is fine and it really doesn't matter at all. RDJ, Sam Jackson and Scar-Jo can raise money for Democrats because they do so in good faith. No one cares and judging by the last election over half the country agrees with them. Different ideology has always worked to America's benefit. Most Conservatives know this is true. However, they do get worked up in to a lather by extremists like Redford, Penn, etc. When they promote terrorists or anti-American propaganda, people never forget or forgive such things. That will hurt the box office to a degree. How much is the question at this point. Too small to matter? Maybe but Redford brings nothing to the table but a negative at this point in his career. No film this century he has been in has been considered a hit. NONE.
"How much is the question at this point:"
....How about zero dollars and thirty-eight cents. 'Nuff said. Move on.

Quit lowballing, sam. We're talking AT LEAST one hundred dollars here, maybe even two hundred dollars.

Which makes me remember that I really miss Mel on the big screen.

Well, he's officially playing "a high ranking person in the SHIELD organization named Pierce." And Marvel has characterized his role as similar to Ralph Fiennes' "New M" in Skyfall.

That's pretty much all we really know at this point.

It would be interesting if he was Nick Fury's predecessor. Perhaps he's a high ranking SHIELD commander (possibly even one of the founders) in WW2 and sends Cap on a mission? Presuming we're still getting WW2 flashbacks.

I think if he's a high ranking SHIELD commander in modern day then it would make me question Sam Jackon's role in the movie. Wouldn't he be a M-like figure to Cap in the modern day era? I mean if he were to defer to a subordinate to relay missions to Cap then wouldn't Fury simply have Maria Hill do that? Plus I don't see Redford simply playing a subordinate to Fury.

I think we may see Redford as the head of another part of SHIELD or even as part of the World Security Council.

I don't know, since we don't have a main villain cast yet, only a couple of henchmen, and MS tends to cast the biggest names in villain roles most of the time, I could see Redford as a former SHIELD agent going rogue somwhere. Or maybe a Gyrichesque character

Yeah I agree. And both Cruise and Gibson has done some fantastic roles.

I agree with Gibson. Cruise on the other hand was never likable nor good in anything I've seen him so his disturbing weirdness is harder to forgive.

I agree. I'm glad Redford was cast. Marvel's (the poster) post on this subject in this thread sent it off in an overly-political direction instead of discussing the awesomeness of having a Hollywood veteran as part of this movie who would've been perfect as Cap back in his heyday.

And I hope Redford does have a significant part and not just a cameo. Who cares about his political views? I certainly hope Evans gets the chance to act opposite Redford and that it isn't just SLJ that RR is interacting with.

Now if Kristin Scott Thomas came onboard, Redford and ScarJo just need to find one of these:

One word: Magnolia. Cruise is astoundingly great in it.

Other movies with a stellar Cruise: Collateral, Rain Man, Eyes Wide Shut, Tropic Thunder, Born on the Fourth of July etc.

He is also very solid and engaging in the straight action lead role.

I too am quite put off by him as a public person, but I will never get why some people don't like him as an actor. And from what I have experienced he gets most of his hate domestically. Here in europe I feel he is very loved as an actor.

But I digress. Redford is awesome and I think it's damn cool when old cool hollywood cats like him take roles in superhero movies.

Yes, he was perfectly cast as the unlikable as$hole, I agree with that. but this is one single performance that stands out of a lot of crappy ones like

Might depend on what part of Europe you're from, because I know not one person around here who has anything good to say about him or his movies. Today I had a little conversation with my stepfather who even said he won't watch Oblivion because Cruise is in it. Even DiCaprio has more fans, probably because he slowly turns into a real actor and not just the Bieber of movies he was a decade ago.

I agree. He might be the most awesome actor in a superhero movie ever. His casting alone made Cap 2 the most anticipated Phase 2 movie for me and I'm a huge Thor fan

This says a lot on how the script must be to get a legend like Robert Redford In It.He's not
someone who does films for paycheck. This also says Kevin Feige wasn't BSing when he called this a Political Thriller.

He's playing "Robert Redford", a socialist liberal who thinks the Avengers infringe on our personal liberties.

I thought the suggestion someone made in the other thread of Col. Rick Stone made sense to me. Or he's an original character.

Redford said he is playing the head of SHIELD.

I wonder if he meant A head of SHIELD or THE head of SHIELD. Because there's a difference.

He specifically emphasizes THE head of SHIELD.
Quote:

While his role was reported as a senior leader of the Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson)-directed S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, Redford clarifies, “Well, the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. The head of S.H.I.E.L.D,” Reiterating why he’s joining the Marvel sequel, he added, “The Captain America thing is just a very simple thing. I wanted to do something different. I wanted to do something just to be different. Something bold, different. And that felt like a good thing to do. That was it, nothing more to it than that. Well, it’s bold in terms of expectations, I guess.”
