I think the lightsaber duels wont get to elaborate until there is a sequel trilogy to this trilogy. Simply because all the old jedi swordsmanship techniques were lost in the jedi purge. Luke has a fairly non complex fighting style. Vader lost his unorthodox technique after the battle with obi wan because of his injuries. So it will take time for new ways of fighting to happen. Most likely post-luke era.

That's true, Luke Skywalker's lightsaber combat style was rather rudimentary compared to the fighting styles of the old Jedi order. However a lot can happen in the many years post ROTJ. Having seen the Clone Wars animated series(Ahsoka's very possible fate), as well as The Force Unleashed(Maris Brood, Starkiller, Rahm Kota), and of course some selected material from the rest of the EU it was seen that some Jedi did indeed survive the purges and could live long enough to join Luke's Jedi Order. They could pass on some techniques.

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Lightsaber_combat

It says here that many styles redeveloped themselves with time

It should be interesting to see what they do in terms of lightsaber duels, if there's some in the new movies. And i get the feeling they will be featured at some point. How prominent will the focus on the jedi be? who knows. But i do hope they dont move away from showing the politics in the New Republic. That's one aspect of Star Wars i've always enjoyed watching.

Politicians, jedi, smugglers, military... there's plenty of room for all of them imo.

I think one reason the duels look so "stiff" in the OT is because they did not have anyone to practice with and try out your techniques on.
I'm assuming that will change in the new trilogy.

Also, how would you feel about seeing other kinds of weapons based on the same tech? I know there is plenty of different stuff in the EU, such as whips and things.

Are the 'okay' reviews for Oblivion making you guys a little worried about SW?

What? Due to Michael Aprt? He was one of the many writers who have worked on that script; it's hard to see who's draft was used the most. So nah..it's about the director to elevate the writing and the performances. I just don't think Oblivion/Tron dude is good at telling stories but is a great and smart visualist.

If the SW script needs work they can always bring on Lindelof to touch it up.

Ya not at all. Ardt is amazing when he works by himself as he did for Toy Story 3 and Little Miss Sunshine. The story of Oblivion was written by Joe the director, and one draft of the screenplay ect. There were four others including the writer of The Departed. Sometimes when you get too many re-writes with different people it never really goes well regardless of the talent. However I've not heard "terrible" things about Oblivion most say it's good not great, or meh. But nothing awful.

And if all else, and this is me guess (or not), 'Oblivion' has a very rigid narrative that Ardt and the writers had to abide by and do their best with what material they had, with Joe the director micro-managing them.

Didn't Joe write this as a comic book/graphic novel first? And I think William adapted it from there, then the last to do it was Michael I think.

No worries. I'm not a stickler on names or anything. But I loved Octoberist saying "Aprt", then you saying "Ardt", then him saying "Ardt". Poetry.

That's why I wouldn't really feel safe with him helming one of the new ST episodes. Maybe a spinoff.

Oh right, I thought Artd () was the only writer on it. In that case my fears have been put to rest, lol.

Also, Anthony Daniels has hinted that he'll be back as C-3PO in VII - http://www.unleashthefanboy.com/movi...sode-vii/50636

While I know this speaking outside of the context of a story or screenplay, but, I am not too excited about them bringing back the original trio. The best time to have done so was the nineties, not twenty years later...

Not at all, these guys are not going to be the main characters, they've already said that there is the "next generation" ect. It needs to be 30-40 years later in the story too which already has pretty much been said.

And I'm exactly the opposite. Bringing back Luke to be a mentor type figure like Obi-Wan count me in and then some.

I don't see them being main characters, I think alot of people against the original trio returning are thinking they are going to be the main characters of the film. A mentor type role for Luke is perfect.

LOL are people really thinking that JJ is gonna have Ford and Fisher running around dodging blaster rounds and explosions for two hours?

Supporting characters, people, with maybe a slight emphasis on Luke in the Obi-Wan/Qui-Gonn role. You have heads, please use them.

I don't disagree at all but.....

"Yeah, like Lucas would have 900 year old Yoda and 90 year old Christopher Lee doing backflips and twirls in a lightsaber battle."

Just saying.
