Batman Returns didn't make as much money as they wanted either. They didn't kill the franchise right then and there. Even with the backlash it got. As for critical reaction, since when has that ever stopped movie companies from making sequels lol? The amount of movies, comic book and non comic book ones that have had sequels to movies that were panned by critics is astronomical.

Being a Batman brand name didn't make it instant success. Batman and Robin is proof of that.

It made more than double its budget back worldwide. Keep in mind it had the biggest budget of all the Batman films up until that time. Just go look at boxofficemojo and see for yourself.

As for the critical reaction, that's just what I heard. You're right in that a movie doesn't have to win over the critics to be successful. That's a whole debate in itself, right there. I think critics can have some influence, though.

I'd love to see a Michael Mann directed Batman film, but I doubt that would ever happen.

David Dobkin or Shawn Levy would be great... the right kind of energy with film Robot Fighting with Wolverine was in the right league for Batman... make it lighter but more seriously family and drama related...also more detection work involved. Shawn Levy is great with detective mystery movie

The guy who did Children of Men and successfully revamped the Harry Potter movies after the Chris Colombus bland version.

I don't get that. His style would be suited to a Brave and the Bold lighthearted adaptation. I'd like to see him do the Flash or maybe Justice League

Rian Johnson is probably the best realistic choice. He's shown a lot of promise, isn't a huge name that would cost a lot of money or demand a lot of control. He's directed three fairly well received films and his most recent film, Looper, got very strong reviews. He's shown, again with Looper, he can do something that has a similar tone (dark, but fantastical/sci-fi) with what most people want in a good Batman film. Actually, he hit on some of the detective noir Batman stuff with Brick....actually, yeah...****in sign Rian Johnson.

He's definitely my favorite choice. Brick x Looper + Batman= best Batman movie ever

problem is, one side of fans will get pissed if he doesn't do a Nolan spinoff with JGL, and another side of fans will get pissed if he DOES do exactly that, so no matter how good it is, joseph Gordon levitt's appearance or lack thereof based on their history together would still upset fans, cause you can never please them and everybody's a ****ing critic.

that being said... yea, i'm down for him.

I want a director that is going to toss "realism" out the window. I loved what Nolan did, but I don't want a grounded, realistic Batman for the reboot's.

I am not too familar with alot of directors, I just want a great Batman story with alot of action, great use of all of his wonderful tools and toys, and not have to worry if its realistic enough

Maybe I'm still high off the Elysium trailer, but hand Blomkamp a blank check. Hell, give him the entire checkbook.
