Same with Chris Reeve as Clark/Superman.

Keaton portrayed a socially awkward Bruce, like Reeve portrayed Clark.

But what was great about Keaton is that he played a realistic take on Bruce. A guy who spent of his time alone. By himself. Only coming out in his element. ..a different person...with one thing on his mind. Beat the scum that took my family from me.

He's that man. And when he's around other people as himself. ..he doesn't know what to do or say, so he comes off like an awkward shy teen. He's nervous. Because he's talking to normal people. He's hardly ever around outside company and he doesn't how to handle himself, so he's a clutz and stimbles with his words.

He's only ever himself around Alfred...but even then, he's a clutz around him at times. Because he's not used to doing normal or saying regular things.

You get a laugh out of Keaton in those scenes. But see that and knowing what he's portraying, then looking at Batman. Nothing short of brilliant!

yes, exactly. he's pretty much Batman all the time, even when he's Bruce Wayne. when in the Bruce disguise he tries to act "normal" pretends to be like other people, but since he has NO experience actually being "normal", it just comes off as weird and kinda clumsy, which ironically enough draws even more attention to "Bruce Wayne", something Batman doesn't want!

there are many, many layers to Keaton's performance if you look for them.

When you put it into words

That's so great about Keaton's interpretation

I always looked at it in the respect of "Batman" being who he was. when he had to be "Bruce wayne",it was like a charade, like he was putting on an act,not being his real self. acting like he thought "normal" people should act when put in situations where he had to deal with them.

this is true. I distinctly remember reading an interview he did back in 1988 or 1989, before the movie came out, saying that it wouldn't do well cause people wouldn't accept someone other than West playing Batman.
