Default Storm VS Mystique

One think I like about the X-Men movies was that they featured many strong female characters as opposed to The Avengers which seems to be only pushing Black Widow (She is awesome though).

X-Men however, has always pushed one female character per movie in terms of promotion, and screen time. In X1 it was Rogue/Anna. In X2 and X3 it was Storm/Halle. For FC it was Mystique/Jennifer.

Now not to say that Ellen, Anna and all the other female actors/characters in this movie are not important but I think it's safe to say that when it comes to the main female character in this movie the producers will either be going with Mystique or Storm simply because a) they both were the main female characters in their respective films, (and in the case of Halle was one of the faces of the OT) and thus will be more recognised by the GA and b) JLaw and HB are the biggest female stars in the DOFP and are actually bigger than most of the male actors.

Now the purpose of this thread is compare the two characters. Disregarding what we personally think about what we think Fox or Bryan will do but based solely on our views of what we think would better suit the film, if one of the two had to be the main character who do you think it should be? We know that both will feature quite heavily in this film but who should get that very top spot and why?

JENNIFER LAWRENCE - MYSTIQUE

Which will be fun to see, because she’s very feisty, as you may have noticed in Silver Linings.”

Sorta off topic, but in X-2 the female that got the most development and screen time was Jean Grey from what I remember, although Halle was in the center of the posters. Although maybe it was the same amount of screen time for both Jean and Storm in X2, but Jean was developed more in terms of character. The Last Stand was all Storm though.

yep in deciding who the main gal was in X2 I considered both promotion and marketing as well screentime, but you're right Jean definitely got more development. I think every character has gotten more development than Storm.

I'd have to say Mystique should be the lead female character in this movie, assuming that her role in the movie is similar to the one she has in the comics (though, outside of her appearance in the DOFP storyline and her connection to Nightcrawler, I never gave a damn about Mystique).

Mystique is a giant question mark for me. I have no idea where her character is going. At the end of First Class she wasn't villainous at all, and probably more likeable than both Xavier and Magneto. I can't logically see her leading the brotherhood or being big time into villainy. But I guess her arc could lead her to that, so I think she'll be the female lead of the movie.

For me personally I'd go for Storm for mainly two reasons. I personally think the main female character should almost always be an X-(wo)Man and secondly Storm is (most likely still) the leader of the team. Halle also although not currently as popular as JLaw is still definitely a big name is the one of the few female actress in this film that I think most of the GA are actually know the name of. (I mean Famke who? Rebecca what?) And face it Mystique isn't the type of character that should be a lead character she should be more like the way she was in X2 with about the same screentime. Storm on the other hand kinda demands screentime.

I'd like to hear others arguments against this though. I personally would be fine with either of them as the lead, I love the both of them but I think Storm works better as a lead character.

I preffer no real lead.

With Mystique, Storm, Kitty and Rogue having a similar screentime.

Mystique shouldnt be a bigger role than Rogue and Kitty, specially Kitty, being an important character on the storyarc. And even if she isnt the traveler, she still should have a decent role on this movie. X3 was kind of her introduction with a decent role, both to Kitty and Ellen, but this movie should make her a more defined and important character yet.

To can continue the franchise having Rogue, Kitty and co. as the great characters they should be and to make the audience fall in love with both.

I highly doubt Storm will be considered a lead in this one. Personally I'd prefer Shadowcat have the most screen time but I think Mystique will walk away with the biggest role. Especially if this film is mostly in the 70's. She's gonna continue development with Fassbender and Hoult, plus probably transition into more of a villain. Alot for her to do.

In an ideal world Shadowcat would have the biggest role followed by Storm, Wolverine and Colossus. Sadly in a more realistic world, the female lead will almost definitely be either Storm or Mystique and I think mystique doesn't work well as a lead character, Mystique is definitely a support character. And when you wan to title a movie X-Men it helps to have your main female character an actual member of the X-Men not a villain. Storm is therefore the better candidate for lead.

Why don't you think that Storm will be getting a lead role?

She could, anything is possible. I just don't think any of the modern team will stand out as a specific lead. They probably will all have their time but as an ensemble. If it's between Mystique and Storm, Raven was already set up with multiple relationships with every lead in FC. If they want to follow up on that and transition her into her X1 counterpart, that will require screen time.

Tough to tell with little info regarding plot, but we do know alot of the film is in the 70s. So unless Storm is in that time period that gives Mystique more possible screen time especially since there aren't any female characters as of now for the FC crew.

I agree with Nana about this franchise being called X-Men so the leads should be the actual x-men, not a supporting villain.

Thats why I think Singer and crew need to improve and put Kitty, Rogue on a higher level, in terms of development, quality, look, action and all. Storm included of course, same with Iceman.

And lets see what happens with the x-men on the 70's, the past really needs a team, so lets see what Bryan brings on the table.

Why do you think that her role in the comics would mean she needed lead role for the movie. In the comics both Storm and Kitty featured more prominently then she did. However I agree with you I like mystique best as sexy, silent, shape shifting assassin. Not as an insecure young woman or whatever her character will be like for this movie.

There's the possibility that they may have Mystique already become the way she is in X1. They could explain her change in personality through the ten year gap. I completely doubt that though, but if that happened then there would be little reason for her to be a lead over Storm. As though you're right Mystique has a relationship with FC leads but Storm also has a relationship with the OT leads particularly Wolverine and Professor x.

I'd love for that to happen but they will more than likely push for certain characters for leads and others for support, I just hope that the leads are the actual X-Men that is my argument for having Storm over Mystique as the lead.

It also works as James and Michael will no doubt be the male leads so we'll get the FC perspective to the story so having Storm the female lead will allows us to get the perspective of the future mutants especially if Storm is still the leader of the x-men it'll mean she'll have interactions with the team as a whole as well as individually. It balances evenly both the FC and the OT sections of this movie and satisfies fans of both casts.

I think you made a solid point.

But I personally think this time Singer will do a great job balancing the screentime, specially of original cast.

I'm going off the assumption most the film will be in the 70's. Mystique is the obvious female lead there and will probably be important to the event that Prof X and crew need to stop. Anything can happen, I just don't see a role here for Storm except that of a team ensemble right now. Anything is possible at this point.

My ranking of the X-Women:
1. Mystique
?. Viper
2. Lady Deathstrike
3. Rogue (because of her story in the movies, I feel like I can relate to her situation)
4. Jean Grey
5. Emma Frost
6. Storm
?. Blink
7. Shadowcat
8. Silver Fox
9. Callisto
10. Angel Salvadore

Who do you think should be the female lead of the two? You're absolutely right that logically from everything we know so far Mystique is most likely the lead but I'd like to know who you personally think should take that spot and why?

When I think of Days of Future Past, I don't envision the film having a female lead to the extent First Class, or even X-Men, does. I picture Days of Future Past being an epic ensemble piece. Between the two, though, Mystique. I don't see why the film should push Storm, when she most likely offers less than Mystique with regard to character relationships, personal storyline, and overall storyline.

Mystique for the same reasons. She has deeper ties to Charles, Magneto and Hank. While I'm personally not a fan of Ravens character in First Class she developed the most conflicts and development out of any other X-Girl in the series. I wanna see them follow through with giving us a proper Mystique and what consequences lie ahead for her early relationships and choices. Storm's relationships and background have never been explored. I'd like to see that but this isn't the film to do that given the consequences of the Future. IT's more of a fight to survive as a team in a reality that may not exist by the films end. To focus on Storms relationships and character in such detail as Mystique doesn't really fit in this this story imo. Mystique is already set up to evolve and has alot of personal space on Magnetos side.

But in terms of marketing, it will 100% be Mystique. Deservedly so, too.

in terms of tv and magazine interviews, I expect soo many Jennifer Law stuff

but in terms of trailers and tv spots, Im sure we'll see plenty of Storm, Rogue and Kitty too.

Of course there will be some badass and sexy Mystique momments, but I believe there will be a great balance there, to please everybody

I think the Xavier/Magneto dynamic will take centre stage in DoFP, as we have versions in both timelines.

There is (as yet anyway) no future Mystique, and no past Storm, so those characters don't have a counterpart to play against in this story about destiny and choice.

But of all the women, it's likely Mystique gets the biggest share - because Jennifer is a hot commodity right now, because we need to see how the past version became hardened into a cold, kick-ass b***h, and maybe because Mystique's actions are pivotal in the comic books.

I would like Storm to get some dimension and development in a future movie. Maybe the next one can open with a Storm origin scene, which turns out to be the character is explaining her background to a new set of students. And perhaps the main plot will link back to that in some way.

I really think is gonna be 50/50 between these two girls, Storm is without a doubt the most powerful authority in the future X-Men (in the future as we know it, may I add, or as left in "X-Men: The Last Stand"), and Mystique is gonna be a fun badass in the past with an added relationship with both of the leads we met in the last movie, so definitely 50/50.

I of course voted for Jennifer Lawrence, cause no matter how much they deny it, she's America's Sweetheart, and they can't wait to show the world that YES, she's in this movie.

About still poll, I voted for Halle Berry just because she appeared in more X-Men films. But I won't be surprised if Jennifer Lawrence gets the female lead spot when it comes to posters and end credits.

I've just heard that Halle Berry will be filming until Late July, that seems like she will factor into this movie much prominently than anyone expected. It almost definitely means that she's the leader as that is the only way they have developed her character.

When does Jennifer finish filming American Hustle, does anyone know? I wonder how long she'll be filming for. I'm starting to think that one of the users on this thread were right when they posted that development and screen time of the two characters may be more equal.

Storm is a fan favourite that needs to finally be done justice and Halle Berry is certainly an A list star that probably would not have signed on unless she knew that Storm had an important (though not necessarily large part). Where as Mystique isn't really a fan favourite (she hasn't been relevant in the comics for quite a while) but Jennifer Lawrence is definitely huge!!

Having said that though Halle Berry was definitely as big as her when she won her Oscar back in 2001 but she wasn't given that much screen time or character development for X2 despite her popularity. I don't think Bryan will go out of his way to give Mystique a huge role as he didn't for Storm. but just like X2 with Halle, Fox will market the hell out of JLaw.
