I think Thor is going to make some serious bank. At the preview at my showing the Thor trailer got huge applause.

I just realized that when someone said that on "the other site" on the story about Pratt's new Star-Lord physique.

There's a good chance this will be over $1b by next Sunday or at least $15-20m off of it.

If the movie does around $50m during the week and $85m next weekend domestically, that puts it at $135m for the upcoming week domestically and boosts it to $810m off of the domestic gross alone. The foreign markets have a good chance of grossing $100m or more if IM3 continues to perform slightly better than The Avengers with the same percentage drop from week 2 to 3. That puts it at $910m for the third foreign weekend. That means foreign weekday numbers only have to come in at around $90m for the film to surpass $1b on Sunday. I don't know if that's possible in the third week though, since BOM doesn't keep track of weekday totals for foreign markets. It's probably not, but still, the film is almost guaranteed to be at most just $80m off from $1b by next Sunday. Crazy.

I think both Thor and Cap will do fine. In both you have big players from Avengers, people will want to check them out.
Guardians of the Galaxy, on the other hand, is a huge question mark for me. Don't know how's that gonna be received.

Me too. Saw it again today for the second time (first one was Friday afternoon matinee). Surprisingly a lot of teenage girls are in the cinema, I always thought this was more of a guy movie but I guess the demographics are bleeding into tween/teen girls which is a good sign.

I know which site you're referring to. A lot of negative comments about Chris Pratt being fat on that article (DC fanboys) but question is have they seen Zero Dark Thirty (A+++ film) and see how badass Chris Pratt is in that movie?

I think it's all about having a great film to start with coupled with proper marketing and creating buzz (which Disney is very good at doing). I was having the same feelings about Thor and Captain America before they came out. Thor especially since he was a very obscure hero (and a very obscure director, Branagh) for ordinary people to relate to but when the final product was released it was a very good, funny film with a heart. So I personally wouldn't worry much about it.

Wow $175 million and it already outgrossed the worldwide earnings of the 1st two Iron Man movies! They have to make an Iron Man 4 for Phase 3!

Brand with good marketing from Disney will ensure the film will have awareness. If the movie is good and generates positive WOM then it will do fine, and given the potential of the subject matter I'd give it a good shot at hitting $600m if not more.

As strange as it is to say, the strength of Marvel Studios brand post Avengers probably makes GoTG less risky in 2014 than Thor and Captain America were in 2011.

Yeah, people went nuts in the theater at the end of the Thor trailer. Given the first Thor movie's good international numbers, I think that film crossing a billion is reasonably likely at this point.

Exactly what I was thinking too The goodwill of TA will extend to all future MCU movies. Heck they could even make a new Hulk movie now (or even a Black Widow/Hawkeye movie) and it would be a hit.

What Marvel needs to happen is one of the other films to be a major hit other than Iron Man and Avengers, both Captain America and Thor did well, but have not done the numbers yet, we will see when the new Thor comes out and eventually the new Captain America, but right now Marvels/Disneys money is coming from the Iron Man franchise, don't get me wrong, I am a Iron nut and am happy to see Iron Man doing so well at the box office, but for Marvels cinamatic future they need to prove that they can have blockbusters without Robert Downey Jr appearing in them.

Females make up a goodly number of Iron Man/Tony Stark's fans. A quick check of Tumblr will prove this.

No doubt. Well, Thor 2 should be a good test. Hemsworth and Hiddleston are stars now, making the cast pretty stellar. Should be a spectacular film. Will be interesting to see how that goes.

Although a figure like $600 million worldwide seems like a lowball estimate at this point, which would probably have made people LoL when speaking of a Thor movie a couple of years ago. So, whatever.

Actuals tomorrow might be $2-3m lower than the estimates. Rth just posted on the BO.com forum that it's looking like $42m for Sunday, which is $2.7m lower than the estimate. Kinda looking like Cinco de Mayo hit it pretty hard.
