Didn't Cruise want Fincher to direct the third film before Abrams got the job? I have vague memories of reading that somewhere, long ago.
After Palma and Woo, Fincher could have been interesting.

Is it too late to get Fincher now?

Fincher was signed to direct M:I 3 for about a year, then dropped off. After that, it got very close to filming with Joe Carnahan directing.

McQuarrie talks M:I

Quote:
Your name has been mentioned in connection with the next "Mission: Impossible" movie. Are you interested in directing one of those films?

Interested and intimated all at the same time. I love the idea of working with Tom on a big franchise and it's a big opportunity to get to follow ["Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol"] director Brad Bird.
It's about finding a way to bring what I do to Tom and J.J. Abrams' franchise. What Brad did was he finally discovered the tone that should define the series. Each movie had its own distinct tone, which is natural given that they were done by different directors. There was a certain thrust to the first one, an operatic quality to the second movie and an intensity to the third. Brad found a delicate balance between danger and fun. There's been nothing like "Ghost Protocol" since "Raiders of the Lost Ark." I think it's important to preserve that voice, while taking somebody like me, who is a little darker and more brutal.

Good news, loved the last movie, and enjoyed Jack Reacher so McQuarrie directing would be welcome news too.

Good News!

I really don't like Tom Cruise generally, so he can be in this M.I. movie and maybe I won't have to be concerned about him stuffing up Napoleon Solo in a Man From Uncle franchise. One Mission Impossible movie was way too much to bear.

I will anticipate something special if they ever do a U.N.C.L.E. movie! Maybe they might even try doing The Avengers again to see it they can get it right this time?

The only Cruise movie of any merit (IMO) have been War of the Worlds in which his usually cocky character get knocked down a few pegs, A Few Good Men in which his cocky character is well overshadowed by Nicholson, Demi and Kiefer, and Interview With The Vampire which was an outstanding out-of-the-norm performance by him I must admit.

Good to see it's closer to fruition. Hopefully Ving Rhames has a decent role this time around. I love his chemistry with Cruise.

I like Ving in these films too. It's always fun and Rhames (games).

I'm glad a MI5 is going ahead. After the third one, which I liked, I thought it was all over. But Cruise emerged out of the ashes and gave us a MI4. Which is neck and neck with the original film for me.

I'm hoping the same team returns for this one.

It's interesting to see Cruise play a less world weary, younger brother type character in a film, I mean Hunt is still 100% Cruise awesomeness, but Rhames provided an older brother, mentor type to bounce off of.

was it only a rumor that Renner would replace Cruise? or did the studio change his mind after the movie made so much money?

I'm not sure, but I'm glad it didn't happen. Cruise is a bit like Downey Jr here, in the fact he makes the experience more entertaining. It's his thing.

If they can top or equal the last movie that will be some feat, M:I4 was superb stuff, hope this movie involves the same M:I team but with more Ving Rhames.

Glad to hear this. Ghost Protocol was a disappointment for me (yes, I know I'm in the minority) so here's hoping this new one thrills.

No director has been confirmed yet, and that includes McQuarrie, Cruise apparently wants him to do it but no deal has been signed so its just a rumour at this point.
