This tie in could work nicely at hinting at an expanded universe, and I'll definitely be getting my hands on this, but I really hope she isn't in Man of Steel.

I have nothing against the character, it's that it would detract from what I hope this film is about. They could put Batman in this film and I'd be sat there thinking 'Get him out of here this is Superman's origin film for frick's sake not JL or World's Finest.'

I'm not really worried though, I'm expecting some tiny easter eggs which will work best I think.

I also figured Zod would send a signal into space for any remaining Kryptonians to come to Earth which would in the after credits scene be picked up by Kara's dormant ship. This all but confirms my theory.

With that one word "Prequel".....DC is doing what they did with Green Lantern, they had prequel comics for it and they were considered Canon.

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:

Probably the only decent things that came out of the whole Green Lantern movie was the comics lol

Supergirl was a much more prominent character than Zod for a long time, plus she existed before all the Phantom Zone villains anyway.

I think of it more of a blueprint of how they could go about bringing Kara into it. If they were to include her it things could definitely be adapted differently as the script went through revisions and of course casting would influence how they approached her and her family.

More importantly, if Kara does indeed exist and they're launching a film universe this could lead to a Teen Titans/Young Justice type movie that should've been made years ago. I can already see how they could have Luthor find a blood sample and create Conner, but that's wishful thinking. She might be mentioned in the movie though. I don't think she's actually in it.

And that they are thinking of at least setting up future DC movies with other DC characters, with MOS. Snyder and Robinov were already saying this, but now we're starting to see it. Whether Nolan likes it or not.

Having Supergirl isn't exactly implying a shared universe. I mean, Supergirl IS a Superman character and heavily tied into the mythos.

Regardless of Nolan's feeling toward a larger DC Universe, including one of Superman's own supporting characters doesn't count toward that at all. Just like Robin in Dark Knight Rises.

I just see Nolan, if he had his way, not having a direct reference to a character that he might not want to see in MOS. Look how he changed the Robin character so it wouldn't be so overt. I see Nolan wanting to stick with the basics, like he did with Batman, because he wouldn't like these other characters, like a Robin (the comic book version) or Supergirl, that some people find "silly".

I never really had the impression that people have an anti-Supergirl thing going on like they do with Robin. Robin was made to lighten up a dark character, Superman was already "light" when Supergirl showed up so it wasn't exactly betraying the tone of the comics. Plus, Supergirl has Superman's powers and isn't in the same kind of danger as a human sidekick like Robin, meaning it would be more realistic for someone like her to become a superhero.
