Default Watching Avengers or watching Phase One: which is the necessary action

I have a question: I have not seen any of the Marvel U movies with the exception of Iron Man...

"DUCKS HEAD FROM FAN OUTRAGE"

Anyway, something I think I realized after looking things up about the Avengers film is that it seems that I don't have to see the other Marvel films before seeing that film. Because of the story's exposition; the backstories referneced or told slightly about each character is enough to treat the Avengers as a stand alone film as well as a film as part of a larger picture (and almost like the Ultimates, which I like).

So, is this true and can I watch Avengers instead? If yes, or if not, please explain.

Yes, you can watch the Avengers without seeing the other films and not be lost.
Anything that needs to be explained about any of the characters are slightly covered in Avengers about why they are there with Fury at the Helicarrier. I really can't go into any more detail without spoiling anything for you. lol

Yes, I'd say that every movie in the MCU stands on it's own, but at the same time gets better if you've watched the previous ones that connect to it as they of course reference them and build off previous things, and you'll understand more nuances. There shouldn't be any problems watching The Avengers, especially not if you know about the characters from the comics.

Binker. You should watch only Avengers and tell us what you think. That particular opinion would be a rare one on this board as most people have seen more than just one solo flick.

Better yet, you should watch just Iron Man 2 and 3 and skip The Avengers. and tell us how you like the trilogy without The Avengers.

Yes, I agree! Not many people we know haven't seen the other films and the Avengers too.

I have seen very little of Avengers from the film itself, not trailers or such (except the sneak peak at the end of Cap via yt), and I'm starting to have an opinion that's more towards a positive response from one team film to another (aka Justice League).

That would be hard because, while I've seen Iron Man 1, I have no interest in watching 2 nor 3. I've heard mixed opinions of 2, and after looking it up (I can handle spoilers, BTW) I feel it's one of the movies to skip because I don't feel it did anything necessary or accomplished anything, and strongly feel that Iron Man 2, after Incredible Hulk, should've been a call back to an early Marvel story and instead be about Tony taking his first SHIELD mission and fighting the Hulk (maybe call it Iron Man vs. Hulk). As for 3; I did the same thing, I feel the same way, and think that if I want to see an adaptation of sorts to Extremis, I will watch the motion comic instead.

I also want to point out that even though I'm asking about seeing Avengers only, there is an interest in seeing some of the others: I've mentioned not wanting to see Iron Man 2, but I would like to see Incredible Hulk and Cap some day ("some day" lol I laugh at that statement), while I would have to watch Thor even though I'm not a fan of the character, and I don't really care for the sequel compared to, let's say, Cap: Winter Soldier.

I also want to point out something else that will get major groans from you guys: the first two movies, Iron Man 1 and Incredible Hulk; my brother bought those DVDs many years ago, and they are behind me as we speak. I saw Iron Man 1 back in Christmas 2012, and said "Hulk was next"; haven't seen that movie yet, and it's been 5 months and 9 days since I said that. ...yup

The only think I could say to explain the delay is that: maybe I didn't want to really force myself to watch these movies, otherwise I would've not enjoyed them and instead see them as "chores to watch". y'know?

Anyway...

Incredible Hulk is a personal favorite. I find it to be one of the few superhero films that doesn't feel like a superhero film. That there's a story in there and not just a build up to an Avengers movie. You'll find I'm pretty well alone in that opinion. Most people dislike TIH, or at least consider it one of the worst MCU films.

Hahaha. I find this amusing. And of course I mean no disrespect by this. I imagine you lead a life of at least average diligence. In other words, you're a busy guy. But I find it amusing that you'll spend the time to post on these forums about the films but find watching the movies themselves to be a waste of time. :P

Have you never sat through legitimately "bad" movies before? Well at least these ones will be entertaining!

Anyway, haha enjoy your contemplation. Let us know what you decide to do. I personally think each of the 7 MCU films is worth watching. At least moreso than Raimi's Spider-Mans or the X-Men franchise. I mean, to say the least.

I loved everything about the Incredible Hulk BUT the Hulk himself. See he looks exactly like a Liefield Hulk and I can't stand the artist. He drew Hulk with a waist that looked like even Wasp could break in two, the Mouth was too big and his Jaw was WAY too narrow. The TIH Hulk to ME looked too cute.
Don't get me wrong I loved the whole movie over Ang Lee's HULK but, I liked the LOOK of the Ang Lee Hulk over The Incredible Hulk's Hulk, and the Avengers Hulk is SPOT ON imo over all of them.

I'm a Thor fan through and through with Cap right behind. My Dad LOVED Captain America First Avenger and he's 84, and did have the Original comics back in WWII. I loved both films I can't choose one over the other unless you go by the DVD/Blu/ray Content of each film. Thor wins there.

I'm legitimately shocked someone with over 4,000 posts on this forum has only seen one Marvel movie. lol.

You don't have to watch the other movies before Avengers, but it might help you enjoy it more

Yeah there are little things that you catch from the Solo Films that aren't in the Avengers.
Like in Thor, Phil Coulson reacts to one of the Agents asking "is that one of Stark's?" when the Destroyer lands on Earth, and Coulson repsonds, "I don't know, He never tells me anything", lol little quips like that.
In First Avenger you get glimpses of the Zola robot body on Blue prints, and a synthetic Human that is supposed to be the Original Human Torch.
Things like that you miss by skipping the solo films
