I've said it in another thread earlier today, but realism is not a selling point for a feature film. In and of itself, it doesn't make a film superior, but in the case of this genre we're all fond of, what you said is spot on - there isn't much realism in the first place, despite what the producers try to hammer into our brains.

I feel like it's as much of a cop out to praise a movie by lauding its realism as it is to criticize another film for its 'campy, cheesy, humor'
The thing is they treat the GA as if they are morons....let's be honest is anyone gonna walk out of MOS because he is an alien or he flies??? If I go see a movie called Godzilla i am expecting there to be giant monsters in it.

Honestly, I think the main reason "realism" is played up as a virtue in geek circles?

Its *because* the Nolan Batman movies did good. . . and thus whatever characteristic can be attributed to them? Is a useful prop for DC fans to try and claim why their movies are "better", in the face of Marvel's rather self-evident superior success. Sure, DC can barely get a movie out the door. . . but Nolan! "Realism"!

well to be honest Marvel and their partner studios have taken that word too...it was the catch phrase on Amazing Spider-man and Thor and Cap and IM3

Realism in the context of these films means gritty, dark, tragic and relatable not realism in tech and physics. What ruined the Iron Man franchise is money. They came out of nowhere and by the tons. People changed (Robert Downey), prespectives changed. If they cared about delivering a good story with style in IM people would not have been so confused and angry with IM3 (which i like, quite a bit). Kenneth Brannagh tried to do pretty much what Iron Man did, a good story, with great characters but in a relatable way. Like he said he viewed Thor as a Shakespearean drama but no, people or fanboys bashed the **** out of him. A reason why The Avengers was such a succes both commercilly and as a movie in general is because it had no plot ! NONE ! Zippo !! Just one liners, action, colour and awesome comic book characters.

"Realism" in the context of this genre doesn't have to mean "dark, gritty, and tragic." Just realistic reactions and responses to these elements of the fantastic and unreality suddenly being dropped in the middle of the real world. It's "realistic" to believe that a lot of people would take the Tony Stark attitude and respond to it all with jokes, wisecracks and one-liners. That's also (*supposed* to be...) Spidey's style and Hawkeye's style.
