I went back and re-watched Superman Returns before MoS and I was cringing every time that Routh was in the suit. It was just bad, and that was only underlined by the creepy super-stalker subplot. Cavill felt human and empathetic, strong, yet sensitive. I really got the Superman/Kal/Clark vibe from Cavill more than Routh ever was able to do for me, if he did at one time at all.
I too felt Cavill was far and beyond the better actor..

But, after saying that, i can see why some didn't like him.. not 'him cavill per se', but rather his character.. there was just too much 'moping, never smiling, always that sad/conflicted face,.. '

One of my friend, said that to me.. he thought cavill was 'wooden and only has one act'... again, i think it's the script's fault here... they should have included some light hearted moments... even the first flight scene was done with such a rush job.. you don't enjoy it, or have no magic...

Perhaps they are hoping there is no sequel.

Precisely. This is a given.

No, I'm not. I'm seriously worried there won't be a sequel and it will fail to meet expectations at the box office. I'll be surprised if MOS gets 250 by the end of its run, domestically...400 mil worldwide would be lucky. :-/

It's funny, I don't think i've ever seen this much talk and coverage over a CBM's box office performance before. It just goes to show you just how much is riding on this film.
The way I see it, there was no groundwork in MOS to set the tone for cameo performances. Easter Eggs is the only thing that was looked upon.

The world of Superman was to be established first and foremost through the reboot and then get a green-lighted sequel (to which I think is a lock at this point) and it will be there to where the DC Universe will be established with other characters coming into the fold, which means bigger numbers for the sequel and a green-lighted team-movie judging by those numbers.

I think MOS set the tone and is going to do MORE than good enough to warrant the sequel. It will be then to where the fast-tracking will begin and the goodies will come pouring in with MOS2 to set up the Justice League connections.

People just need to calm down for a second.

Sequel has been underway for awhile. Beyond locked after last weekend's grosses.

Weekend grosses aren't good. $40M is terrible off that opening. No way to spin that. But people are overreacting.

People who think Routh is a better Superman than Cavill must really enjoy a Superman with no personality.

Aside from a collapse on an EPIC scale you should have no worries.

The Superman = Jesus thing was much more overdone in Returns. Hell, they even had him "die" and come back at the end. The numerous floating with arms stretched out crucifix-like poses. Floating above the Earth like God listening down on the little people's pleas for help. Not only that but the whole "the father becomes the son, the son the father", which to be fair was lifted from the Donner movies, but it was still much more ham-fisted than what MoS did. In fact, until someone complained about it I wasn't even aware of any Jesus overtones other than the scene with the priest and to stretch a little the fact that he was 33 when he became Superman (which most weren't likely to get anyways).

Exactly! Stone-faced with a little smirk was all of the personality that Routh had. That and he was also doing his best to do a Christopher Reeve impression too, so the performance wasn't even completely his which felt weird.

I must preface by saying that i thought Cavill is a far better actor..

but my friend told me he thought Cavill was wooden and one dimensional (I think in this case, it's the script that portrays him constantly moody and in one dimension.. not due to his acting).

So, when you put up 'One personality of being moody/brooding/conflicted vs 'no personality at all'.. they are the same to some...

Star Trek vs Star Trek I? Casino Royale against Pierce Brosnan movies?

Again, does it matter much if a reboot film going against its previous incarnation? Try comparing most rebooted movies against untested new movies. In other words, which film do you want to bet your money on, Man of Steel or Pacific Rim? Wolverine or RIPD?

The movie is a lock to make over 250mil domestically and if you don't think that you know nothing about box office numbers. When Hunger Games dropped 61% every was saying how it wasn't going to hit 400mil and it did. This film is still headed for 275-290mil whether you like the film or not. And I'm not burying my head in the sand obviously not everyone loved the film like I did. That hurt it this weekend and the two giant films released. It was a mixture of both. That drop isn't good but I'm probably getting a sequel so whocares?

I hated that they made him 33 JUST for that fact. 32. 34. Any other age. WHY 33? Because Goyer says Superman = Jesus, of course!

But really, it's not even about Jesus. It's about $$$$$$ (and not "S" as in "Superman"), so let's make him "Jesus" if that'll get some church people in! Church money spends just the same as regular moviegoer money, right?

But that didn't do aswell as this is doing at that point and I think had it been considered a good film and not backed them into a corner like it did with so many things e.g. the kids hey probably still would've gone ahead with a sequel. There's so much more riding on this like the start of a DCU on film.

250? MOS will have surpassed that by next weekend. It'll be at 260 by next Sunday.

Lucky? It's on track for 400.

It was an ORIGIN tale that had major back-story on the world Clark was conceived on. People are forgetting the fact that this origin story dealt with the inner-battle of a child-turned adult savior all in one breath and had more of a fatherly/son relationship that dealt with outrageous choices of becoming who he needed to be.

MOS is the spring-board of Superman becoming the hero we all so recognize today and the point of accepting himself and moving forward to become the better man. Did anybody see the ending? "Welcome to the Planet" and the innocent relief of Clark's smile before the credits? Those heartfelt moments and magic will come in the ongoing story.

Both were good. Neither better than the other frankly and Cavill spoke less than Routh and didn't even get to fully play all the Supes/Clark characteristics.

And this is not the thread for that discussion.

He is right, the movie isn't going to fall 62-64% each weekend, you are overreacting to the bad drop.

This is actually quite simple using logic.

IM2 made 128,122,480 in it's opening weekend
MOS made 125 in it's opening weekend (if you want to include Walmart, which I have absolutely no idea why you wouldn't)

IM2 dropped 70.5% on it's 2nd Friday. While at worst MOS is looking at a 71% drop (I'm pretty sure the guy pages back who came up with that percentage used Walmart's numbers). IM 2 made 51 mil in its second weekend. MOS at worst is looking at 44 mil. So that's just 7 mil less. And if you discount MOS Walmart, looking at 116 mil -- then it seems that Yahoo's drop of 70% (less of a drop than IM2) is looking to be accurate (since it seems like they didn't include Walmart). IM2 dropped 77 mil in its second weekend, discounting Walmart MOS dropped 73 mil (including it, it dropped 81 mil).

In the end, IM2 ended with 312 mil.

Now unless we drop off the face of the earth, I see no reason how it could possibly be 250 mil since we're basically operating the same just less.

Yes, I totally understand that... that's why i said, the lack of 'character or one dimensional part of clark / supes' was due to the writing.. not Cavill...

But to some of my friends, they thought it was just Cavill's bad acting...

I wouldn't mind some 'magical moments' inserted into this movie though... that'll remove 70% of the complains instantly...
