Default "Romeo & Juliet Return?": The Official Jean Grey/Cyclops Debate

"Romeo & Juliet Return?"
The Official Jean Grey/Cyclops Debate

Yes, I know they're "dead" or are at least supposed to be as of X3. Yet Bryan Singer's latest comments about "fixing some things" (plus Famke's confirmed appearance in the upcoming Wolverine film) gives me hope that these two might an appearance in Days Of Future Past.

Stats: Jean Grey
REAL NAME: Jean Grey
KNOWN ALIASES: Phoenix, Marvel Girl
IDENTITY: Secret
OCCUPATION: Adventurer, freedom fighter
CITIZENSHIP: USA
PLACE OF BIRTH: New York. New York
MARITAL STATUS: Single
KNOWN RELATIVES: Nate Grey (cloned son), parents (deceased)
GROUP AFFILIATION: Formerly X-Men
EDUCATION: College
HEIGHT: 5 ft. 7 in.
WEIGHT: 125 lbs.
EYES: Green
HAIR: Red

SUPERHUMAN POWERS: Jean Grey possessed telepathic powers allowing her to read mines, project her thoughts, and mentally stun opponents with pure psionic force, among other talents. She also possessed telekinesis, allowing her to levitate and manipulate objects. As the Phoenix, she has the ability to exist in any environment without harm, project force bolts of incalculable power and create force fields. She also possesses the power of telepathy, illusion-casting; her link with the Phoenix force gives her vast psionic ability to manipulate time, space, matter, and energy for virtually any purpose.

Stats: Cyclops
Real name: Scott Summers
Identity: Known to certain government officials
Legal status: Citizen of the United States with no criminal record
Place of birth: Anchorage, Alaska
Marital status: Married
Known relatives: Christopher (Corsair, father), Katherine Ann (mother, deceased), Alexander (Havok, brother), Philip, Deborah (grandparents), Madelyne Pryor (first wife, deceased), Jean Grey (Phoenix, second wife), Nathan Christopher (Cable, son), Gailyn (niece), Joey (nephew) Rachel (Phoenix II, daughter by Phoenix in an alternate timeline), Tyler (Genesis II, grandson, deceased)
Group affiliation: (current) X-Men, (former) X-Factor I
Base of operations: (current) Xavier Institute, Salem Center, Westchester County, New York State, (former) X-Factor I headquarters, New York City; "Ship"
First appearance: X-MEN (first series) #1
Height: 6 ft. 3 in.
Weight: 195 lbs.
Eyes: Brown (glow red)
Hair: Brown
Strength: Athlete
Fighting skills: Extensive training in hand-to-hand combat
Special skills and abilities: Experienced battle tactician, strategist
Known superhuman powers: Cyclops possesses the mutant ability to project a beam of concussive, ruby-colored force from his eyes. Cyclops's eyes are no longer the complex organic jelly that utilizes the visible spectrum of light to see the world around it. Instead, they are inter-dimensional apertures between this universe and another, non-Einsteinium universe, where physical laws as we know them do not pertain. This non-Einsteinium universe is filled with particles that resemble photons, yet they interact with this universe's particles by transferring kinetic energy in the form of gravitons (the particle of gravitation). These particles generate great, directional concussive force when they interact with the objects of this universe.

Cyclops's mind has a particular psionic field that is attuned to the forces that maintain the apertures that have taken the place of his eyes. Because his mind's psionic field envelops his body, it automatically shunts the other-dimensional particles back into their point of origin when they collide with his body. Thus, his body is protected from the effects of the particles, and even the thin membrane of his eyelids is sufficient to block the emission of energy. The synthetic ruby quartz crystal used to fashion the lenses of Cyclops's eyeglasses and visor is resonant to his minds' psionic field and is similarly protected.

The extra dimensional supply of energy for Cyclops's eye-blast is practically infinite. Thus, so long as Cyclops's psionic field is active (which is constantly), there is the potential to emit energy. The only limit to the eye-blast is the mental fatigue of focusing constantly. After about 15 minute of constant usage, the psionic field subsides and allows only a slight leakage of energy to pass through the aperture. Cyclops's metabolism will recover sufficiently for him to continue in about an additional 15 minutes.

Special limitations: Due to a brain injury, Cyclops is unable to shut off his optic blasts at will and must therefore wear a visor or glasses with ruby quartz lenses that block the beams.

The Scoop:
I honestly believe that at least Scott should be in Days Of Future Past. He, along with Storm, would provide the greatest X-Men threat to the Sentinels since they are the most powerful members of the team (sans Jean Grey) and can create extensive long-range damage to this enemy. The mess comes into play when one considers that Scott "died" in X3, although this was never officially proven and could be explained away in Days Of Future Past.

Since Bryan Singer has vowed to "fix" some issues by bridging the cast of the original trilogy with that of the First Class via time travel, it seems this is the perfect opportunity to undo a decision that has been denounced by fans for several years now. I think most of us would agree that X-Men: The Last Stand truly ruined both characters for silly, political reasons. The question is...how does Bryan fix this?

Personally? I think that Cyclops has the edge in returning for Days Of Future Past because Tim Pocock already made an appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine as a younger Cyclops. But again, it presents all sorts of continuity issues since Xavier was clearly played in Patrick Stewart's likeness in Wolverine versus the obvious addition of James McAvoy now. How do they fix this?

And there were a lot of rumors in Hollywood at the end of 2012 that James Marsden was being looked at seriously by FOX to return. And Famke Janssen's "Jean Grey" appears in the next Wolverine film. So the studio is definitely not "done" with these characters completely. Lots to discuss!

Questions For Discussion:
1.) Should Scott and/or Jean Have A Role In The Next X-Men Film? Why Or Why Not?
2.) Do You Think Bryan Singer Will Add The Characters In "Days Of Future Past"?
3.) Should Actor Tim Pocock Return As 'Cyclops' in "Days Of Future Past"?

I'd be interested in seeing Storm as a more central character, but not with the same old Halle who's been playing her since 2000, sorry.
Agreed.

They should only recast minor roles like Colossus. But for Storm, if Halle Berry portrayed Storm from the beginning, then she should portray Storm until they reboot this series. She's been portraying this character for more than a decade now, no need to recast her just because Storm is going to have a bigger role in the next movie.

): I like Daniel Cudmore as Colossus. I think he did well in the twilight movies as a fighter.

The recast is unnecessary and kills continuity.

The thing is, if this movie turned out not so great. Having too many characters will automatically be one of the criticisms about the movie.

Exactly. I'm not having high expectations from all characters, as long as they have their shinning moments, I would be okay with that.

The stunt double thing is interesting. That would be an odd bit of info to make up or get wrong. I hope it is right and Famke is back!

Famke would have a very big yr then if she appears in DOFP as she may return for Taken 3 and will have season 2 of her show, Hemlock Grove.

If Famke is in DOFP, I think they will announce it when The Wolverine is released to increase buzz for that movie.

problem with everyones theory that phoenix is still alive is that... X3's phoenix isn't the comic phoenix, what works in the comics may not work with this version of the phoenix

singers overall plan for phoenix from X2 was changed when they decided to add to jeans back story in X3

exactly.

X3 Jean wasnt never Phoenix. So that Jean cant be alive on the same timeline.

So if Singer wants her back, he will have to adress the alternate universe, or she appears once they change the past.

Even In comics Jean's return has been

1:It was retconned that Phoenix wasn't really Jean just took her form,Memories, and personality while real Jean was In cocoon
2:After being killed by character who claimed to be Magneto they had to bring Original X-Men to future to bring Jean back.

The best way to bring back Jean as well as Cyclops would have been to pull a Superman returns to Last Stand and have Jean In future scenes and just say at some point before sentinles Jean returned from apparentet death at end of X2.
However It doesn't appear they are doing that so that likely leaves us with

Alternate timeline
Time travel resurrects Jean and Cyclops at end of film

There Is always the possibilty of them changing for big screen Phoenix's powers so It can resurrect Itself. But,you would also have to come up with reason why It didn't immedetly destroy all sentinles.

cyclops and jean could be brought back mid film, if they do what wolverine and the Xmen did and once go back and forth, i still think you can't have wolverine in the past changing things and nothing in the future changes in that time till the end

if wolverine speaks to Xavier about jean early in the film, then thats changed in the future, that is if the film cuts back and forth of course

Yeah but Wolverine and the X-Men didn't magicly resurrect characters.

They could follow a structe of film

part 1-future with sentinels
part 2-1973
part 3-altered future at end of film

jean has an action scene, if she is alive at the end there is no need for a stunt double, unless there is a big action scene ending with the OT

singer did say time displacement to describe the time travel, now time could be changing around wolverine

There's nothing that says what Jean's power limits are. She's crazy. She was a Phoenix bird in one movie and a zombie that disintegrated people in the next. They should redeem what X3 did to Phoenix by expanding her powers even more and showing the audiences she's a "phoenix" because she keeps resurrecting.

Otherwise, the Phoenix we got was just meh

Her powers could have been so great that after Wolverine stabbed her, her mutant power like...just kept her essence afloat. She's a being without a body in The Wolverine. Like maybe by killing her in X3, the Phoenix force was created in a sense. It could re-materialize her body from the flames in DOFP.

Or they could just bring her back with Cyclops in an alternate timeline. But I feel that would make her seem less powerful... they didn't really make her the goddess she should have been. I guess I just want her presence in The Wolverine to be linked to DOFP. But I'm just glad she's back.

I hope thats the case but I think they could interact the scenes of Part1/Part 2 throughout the film. Like in Lost, we will some of the cast in modern-day period then in the next we will some of the cast in the 70s.

It's very possable like the original comic book version they could cut back and forth between 1973 and future.Like maybe final showdown with sentinles Is intercut between the 1973 attempt to stop Brotherhood from killing Trask or Nixon.

But,It should also be noted for those wanting the 1990's animated version of DOFP to influence the film version that one started In future and then moved to present for most of the story.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere on here that stunt and crew information can only be added to IMDB by agents, so anything on that front is official. Its how someone here figured out that Josh Helman was in the cast weeks before the Hollywood trades reported on it. So basically, Famke is 100% appearing in the movie, and with enough of a part that she'd need a stunt double. Couldn't be more excited! I imagine The Wolverine will end with her being resurrected and we'll see that play out in DoFP.

So if Famke returns at the end of The Wolverine, that settles that. Why that would be the case is beyond me... but maybe they will just use the symbolism of Jean Grey and she doesn't really take on a bodily form. The stunt double could do the motion capture. Still no explanation for Scott though. Was Scott alive all along? How do you explain this one if you were a writer? I'm sure it was discussed at length after TLS, but we are looking at at least a few years post DoFP. Where was he all that time?
