Love the setting of this game. Hopefully the gameplay is better than it looks although I'll probably use Kinect so expect to enjoy it regardless. Taking part in a Roman battle (with Kinect) on a Sunday morning sounds like a fun workout lol.

Theres no doubt in my mind that the qte's will be a lot less in the actual game or they'll be optional like in Darksiders

They've confirmed the qtes are just how pull off the executions and you'll unlock over 100 of them. They're completely optional and even if you hit b to execute, you don't have to press the other buttons but if you do you get more xp

![]() ![]() Ryse producer Michael Read outlines what combat will be like the final game and it won’t have button prompts floating overhead. Ryse also has a system where you can recover health by doing executions or if you’re doing well you can earn bonus XP. Quote:

I don't get the hate this is receiving. What if it tells an amazing narrative? Since when was combat gameplay the last word on a game? If that's the case, Skyrim and Walking Dead were awful. I'm fine with button prompts. It's more interactive than mashing the same button 4 times and getting a canned animated finisher.

I have to admit that the game has that strange vibe that it'll be forgotten a few years from now.

Ryse looks so awesome, I can't wait to play it. It's the Roman General Gladiator game I've always wanted to play, ever since the movie Gladiator, now I get to be Maximus and I will be entertained !
I know the on stage E3 demo showed what many felt was a lot of QTEs, but those were the execution moves which are optional, as Crytek developers have explained, and the person demoing it just got over happy and carried away with it. That said it will certainly be toned down, but other than that, the game looks absolutely phenomenal, 10/10. I can't wait to buy it and play it, day one ! DAY ONE SON! |

The bottom line for me with Ryse is that the multitude of QTEs aren't so much a problem on their own, but rather a symptom of a much greater problem, not only with Ryse, but with gaming in general. But no one wants to hear about that, so I'll just leave you guys to it. |

How the hell do you know it won't have a great storyline. For all we know it could have the greatest story and characters we'be ever witnessed in a game. And seriously Skyrim not combat focused? Thats all you do in that game. They've said many times the qtes are not only optional but not a big part of the game like they showed. It has a deep system but it was implemented in time for e3.

But let me add this, a lot of people were going to bash Microsoft's pressor to begin with no matter what they showed, but the majority and the original core of those people stem from a very loud, and very vocal Sony fanboy/employee paid presence on the internet and in the industry. Game site boards are another form of advertisement that can in theory help generate buzz and swing momentum for a particular user base, and of course brain wash the weak minded in the masses, that don't have the ability to think as an individual and for themselves and tend to just follow the crowd. I know and have proof for a fact Sony pays to spread propaganda on the internet as a form of advertising. They have plants on all the sites, corporate shills posing as regular users. That said, the other nay sayers were of course Game Stop people and even Gamefly, afraid of the DRM licensing and blocking of used games, and shutting down their business, and lastly, just plain good old fashioned jealous fanboys and trolls. But yeah, anyway, Crytek is known for making amazing looking games to begin with, obviously, and this game is by no means an exception. It looks absolutely stunning. I love how this game also doesn't have any fantasy elements or magic, its a pure Roman conquest, conqueror, warrior, campaign game. The combat has already been compared to the Batman Arkham games in terms of game play and controls. This game is looking to shape up to be a 10/10 and a BIG WIN for Microsoft, I'd buy the system for this game alone, thankfully Microsoft has plenty others I'm interested in too ! Can't wait for Xbox One ! |

Yeah, well, I got no problems believing you took some pills before writing all of that.

I've been playing Resident Evil 5 & 6 recently so am getting fed up with QTEs! But those are failable QTES where you have to redo a section if you don't get it and they can also have very strict time windows. If QTEs aren't overly difficult or if it doesn't matter if you fail them I don't think I'd have a problem with them, as looks the case here. What matters is how the base combat plays out. I don't mind being able to button bash a bit as long as there are 9 or 10 great moves you can string together.

Gladiator Mode trailer
and... "After a hands-on with the latest build on the eve of Gamescom, however, I have good news: there's no need to worry about Ryse: Son of Rome. The combat has plenty of depth, and the AI is aggressive enough that you'll be challenged plenty. Oh, and QTEs are merely optional finishing moves, with the giant button prompt over a foe's head replaced by a subtle colored outline around the not-long-for-this-world bad guy that corresponds to the button you're supposed to press in order to nail the best execution." Could be a fun mode but still can't really fully tell how it plays.
And as for that comment above on QTE's the game has officially been branded a QTE-fest by those who saw it for a few minutes at E3 and I don't think there's any way back for those fellows (who probably were never going to be buying XB1 anyway ![]() But this is encouraging and I hope there is depth to the combat so it doesn't get repetitive like many other hack and slash / melee fighter games.

Ryse revised: How Crytek altered combat for the better
56 Many people really latched onto Ryse: Son of Rome's execution system when Crytek showed off the game at E3 earlier this year – but probably not in the way the developer wanted them to. Ryse's executions, which grant the player various in-game perks – and see protagonist Marius stabbing, gouging, slicing, bashing and otherwise maiming barbarians – are performed via short quick time events. Even though the majority of Ryse's combat has an ebb and flow similar to the Batman Arkham games – flurries of attacks sprinkled with timely parries – many prospective players, myself included, worried about the QTE-infused combat getting stale. Crytek has responded to those concerns, and the build of Ryse being shown at Gamescom has a significantly altered execution system. Gone are the garish button prompts. Instead, enemies are subtly highlighted with the color of the appropriate button: Yellow for the shield (Y) and blue for the sword (X). By watching Marius' animations and keeping an eye out for each color, I easily slipped into the rhythm of various executions, something I can't say about the E3 build I played in June. The E3 reaction didn't directly inspire the changes to the execution system, design director Patrick Esteves tells me, but it definitely played a part. "We were already down a course. We already knew where executions were going. And, of course, in game development, we have to figure out what's the best way to do something." "People don't like the idea of a QTE-based combat system. Thank God we're not a QTE-based combat system," says Esteves, alluding to the fact that there is more to Ryse's combat than people may have perceived from the E3 demo. Just as I did in June, players will eventually discover that the combat is more about a dance-like back-and-forth between Marius and foes than it is about executions. "That was the first thing," says Esteves, "and the second thing is, is the communication language good enough for the game?" Crytek decided it wasn't. Continue Reading source:JoyStiq |
