Again Hollywood whitewashes roles meant for Asians.

Shredder looks pretty pale in the new TMNT cartoon.

This. Shredder in the new cartoon seems more like a white guy in appearance.

Though to be fair, Shredder in the 87 series looked and sounded like a black guy, and in the 2003 series he looked asian but sounded white.

Total speculation here....but I'm thinking perhaps they may go the Nickelodeon series burn victim route, where so much makeup/prothetics will be needed when not in mask that his race will be unrecognizeable anyway:

I was thinking the same thing.

In that way, he would kinda be a glorified voice actor, but to be fair, that's what the Turtles' and Splinter's actors are too, in a way.

Hmm, that's an interesting direction to take the character. I wouldn't be opposed to this (I'm actually kind of hoping they totally go this route now that we know Fitchner is Shredder).

hmmmm...if they are going with a burnt/heavily scarred Shredder, then i don't mind Fitchner's casting as much

I just re-watched the first film yesterday. Shredder was a truly menacing presence in the film. I wonder if the character in this film will be able to match that whatsoever.

^ Well luckily we do have a good actor playing him, so at least the acting will be legit. It all just depends on the direction and origin they're giving this Shredder. We'll probably get a much better idea of where they're going with the character with the first teaser/trailer (if he's even included).

Agreed. Fitchner is a great actor. It all depends on the direction they go with the character at this point.

And as far as the teaser goes,... I don't think we'll get too much focus on Shredder.

It depends.

I don't know if he can act or not, his appearance in TDK certainly didn't do him any favors. With that said he stands no chance of matching Shredders presence from the first film. No villain has had that eerie, silent/violent, scary vibe since.

The new Shredder immediately turned me off, because he has Mega Man proportions. With those giant boots and gauntlets.

If they kept the mask on ala Judge Dredd the entire time and never showed Fichtner's face, I wouldn't care, or if they show Splinter and Shredder's origins via flashbacks by using animation I wouldn't care either, but if they do the origin story via through live-action, I don't want to see Fichtner try to play Japanese dressed in a kimono. That will, indeed, be whitewashing the character.

His 30 second role in TDK isn't enough to judge whether he'd be a better shredder or not.
But I kinda hope they go the burned route. I really wanted a Japanese shredder. But Oh well.

Wow, awesome interview.

Fichtner sounds totally seething with passion about this project

Took him much longer than usual time when actors need to gather their list of bs for promoting an upcoming film, interview format, when it's such an obvious cash grab.

He's really good in Prison Break. He doesn't appear until the second season though. Anyway, that was nothing like his part in The Dark Knight and it makes me confident in his diversity as an actor

William Fichtner reveals his character's name in the new TMNT movie. Not Oroku Saki, but named Eric Sachs

Eric Sachs?

Haha.

I immediately noticed how similar that sounds to the "Orok Sak" in "Oroku Saki".

It was obvious he wasn't going to be named Oroku Saki. You just can't give a white guy that name. Even if you do say he has a japanese background.

Speaking of which, his response to being asked if the character is Japanese gives me hope that they are giving him a japanese background as opposed to a straight up military character, or even the alien from dimension X.

Yea, I'm almost certain we're going to see a sort of Bruce Wayne westerner coming out of ninja world type of deal with him.
I think kids today would be really open to something new of this sort.

Do you really believe that's the route they are going with?

Since those initial set pictures of a militarised looking Foot to Fitchter's casting all the way to this interview there's been so many complex scenarios to justify how this can be somewhat faithful to pretty much every other version of the character and the Foot and overlooking what I think is the more obvious option that this version has jack in common with The Shredder.

Remember these changes are being made grudgingly because of the massive outcry from not just fans but the general public. I don't think anyone is going out of their way to change the Schrader concept overmuch.

Or, they could've just decided to keep the idea of a militarized foot.

People keep forgetting that option.

Militarized Foot does not equal Colonel Schrader version of The Foot and Shredder, nor does it equal a bastardization of the original character.
