I'd prefer him for Lex Luthor over Bats, tbh.

The problem with casting this role is that you need somebody who can play both the levelheaded professional crimefighter that Batman is, and the airhead media whore that he pretends to be. Someone you can by as both grizzeled and a heartthrob. Any suggestions?

Also, I personally would prefer an American actor for Batman. Not to be xenophobic or anything, just that Batman's persona seems more of an American archetype than a British one. Also, it may just be me, but I rarely find a non-American actor doing an American accent convincing, it always sounds stilted to me.

I don't think there is anything especially American about Batman. The knightly/aristocratic/vampiric/Sherlock Holmes influences on his premise are much more European.

The character is de facto American, but I don't think the nationality of the actor should be considered at all.

Perhaps you're right. I guess it's more just that an actor who didn't have to worry about hiding his accent could focus more on the character. Also, I know it's stereotyping, but I'm kind of worried about getting another Christian Bale (people can disagree, but I thought he was one of the weaker aspects of the Nolan movies).

Bale was IMO the strongest aspect. If it wasn't for Bale and the magnetism I feel from him especially as Bruce, then im sure Begins wouldn't have had that effect on me. Begins was all Bale and I never turned back after that performance.

I really do not want to see another reboot of Nolan's 'trilogy'.

I don't believe that he conceived it as a three-film deal when he made Batman Begins. Does anyone know if he did?

Let them just continue with the story of Bruce returning from wherever he was in Europe to resume as a rejuvenated Dark Knight and if Christian Bale is not available then why not someone who resembles him a bit - like Matthew Fox?

AND FURTHERMORE - keep The Tumbler! If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it!!!

I believe the tumblers are all screwed now. If they ever were to continue the Nolan-verse I would have liked them to make a more classic version of the batmobile. One that resembles a car instead of a tank. A modern, updated, advanced version of Burton's batmobile basically.

The Tumbler was the most brilliantly conceived Batmobile ever created, and there were a few of them manufactured as shown in the 3rd movie of Nolan's series.

Storywise, I find it hard to imagine all the tradesmen and technicians who worked for Morgan Freeman were not able to connect that Bruce Wayne was The Batman.

Im pretty sure they were all used by Bane's people and destroyed. Maybe they weren't though, the next time I watch Rises ill keep tabs on each of them. But they're definitely the last of them.

Even in our imaginations, the future is obviously set up for Blake as the batman of the future, and id assume that because the tumblers are gone, the batpod has disappeared...Blake would need a new batmobile. And he would have to get bigger in size but I tend to imagine him in a sleeker batmobile anyway (like Keaton's) that would match his look. Bale was a very loud and physical Batman when he wanted to be and I assume Blake would be a lot calmer and more shadowy. So it would be a good fit.

Fair enough. I though he was okay in Begins, but as time went on I found him more whiny and overemotional, and him getting duped and beat up all the time really got old after a while.

I guess not lol. Him getting duped and beat up has nothing to do with Bale. Overemotional? Bale is the peak for the role at this point, yes even above Keaton (im not talking Batman per say, but more Bruce Wayne..even though Keaton was awesome). Bale IS the peak for Bruce right now and it's going to take a miracle to get somebody who can pull off the 3 role dynamic as well as he did.

Bruce stole Begins AND Rises. Solid as hell in TDK but was overshadowed at times by Ledger and Eckhart for obvious reasons.

And I honestly think Bale was at his best in TDKR.

Bale was perfect in all three films. Each one called for a different "tint" to see Bruce through. BB called for a young, angry, driven Bruce. TDK needed Bruce to show quiet agony and brilliance at the same time while letting the Joker/Dent shine. And TDKR required Bale's most powerful performance, as it was all about Bruce's journey.

Bale nailed it each time.

I would agree, Bale was consistently one of the strongest aspects of the trilogy. Bruce/Batman is an extremely difficult part to play, because you have to connote an indomitable strength and an acute emotional frailty at the same time, while also being able to convincingly portray personas within personas that are to be treated as factual by the other characters but as counter-factual by the audience.

I can think of very few actors who are up to the task and, currently, none who I believe would do a better job than Bale. If Bale's performance is being used as some kind of argument against casting a non-American actor as Batman, then that argument seems deeply flawed.

Boy did I just make some enemies.

Okay, having rewatched some clips from the trilogy, I will admit that "whiny and overemotional" was the wrong choice of words and that Bale does have a charm to him as Bruce Wayne. Still, I distinctly remember watching them the first time, seeing Bale trying to be intimidating or express anguish ("Where are they?", "Do I look like a cop?", a lot of the scenes where he has to yell), and thinking "He sounds so pathetic". That may have been what they were going for in some places, but it's not something I want to think about when one of the most badass characters in comics is on screen. I don't think Bale is a bad actor (though perhaps not the cinematic godsend everyone seems to think he is), but between this and Terminator Salvation, I'm beginning to think he wasn't meant to be an action hero. Nevertheless, it was a passable performance and I meant no ill will toward the guy.

Getting back on topic, I'm still trying to think of a realistic casting choice, but it recently occurred to me that, were it possible to cast a black Batman, Will Smith would be a pretty cool choice to play him.

Experience in both action and drama, proven serious acting chops, but also probably pretty familiar with being a billionaire media-friendly celebrity, as Bruce often pretends to be, and a likability and charm underneath all of it. A little old, but youthful enough to pass for mid-30s.

Never gonna happen, but I would totally see that movie.
