i don't understand the love fest for this movie. i watched it for the first time when i was about 5 years old and thought it was whatever. over the years i've watched it anytime it was on TV and i still think it's a cheesy/campy film. Luthor's entire plot about destroying California, Superman turning back time, some of the dialogue, etc.
Hackman was hilarious and Reeve gave an excellent performance. about the only good thing i liked about that film. other than that, i think it's beyond overrated. |

like I said,it perfectly fits the Silver Age. does it work now? definitely not. if it were released today, it would be considered another Batman & Robin.

It's amazing that after 35 Years and two reboots...this is still the best Superman film.

Depends on what you're looking for. With all the cheesiness and hammy Lex Luthor, it's definitely not the best Superman film for me.

If you'd made some sort of valuable comment regarding your opinion that I could have discussed, I'd have elaborated further on my post.. but since you didn't, I didn't.

I certainly didn't grow up with this film as a child unlike others so it was only recently that i decided to view it in its entirety and it's a good film but i kept thinking that if i was alive in 1978 i'm sure i'd think this was a great/amazing movie but it hasn't transcended time as well compared to a lot of the other great movies of that era.
I'd say the only timeless aspect is reeve's performance the other aspects which again were probably amazing in their day don't stand up well enough for a modern era/audience. I'm sure nostalgia plays a role but abstractly it doesn't hold up amazingly. It's not fair comparison perhaps but other movies from that era be it the godfather or Apocalypse Now totally transcend the era which they were in. |

I'm pleased to see this thread is still going.
'Haminess' and 'cheesiness' that people complain about is simply a matter of time and taste. In fifteen years, the 'realism' that is in fashion at the moment won't be popular anymore, and people will criticise The Dark Knight and Man of Steel for not being in the style that is popular in 2028. Everything goes out of fashion eventually. You have to ignore that when accessing a film's qualities.

It hasn't really aged very well. The flaws have been dug into already (Luthor's plans, turning back time, how irritating Ned Beatty is) and while it certainly isn't a bad film by any means, and was of course massively influential, it's very much rooted in the 70s. Plus Lois' (and everybody else by that matter) shrugging off the fact that this is an alien from a far away planet always baffled me.
