My point being a war with China is unlikely since they have nukes.

Well, there was that time they and Russia very nearly went to war. Little known in the West, but it may have been the closest we (as a species) have ever gone to a full-scale nuclear war. Be sort of a funny way to end the Cold War. Russia and China nuke each other out of existence as America just watches.

I would say that the economics is the biggest reason why China and the United States won't go to war. The United States and China are too co-dependent on one another economically for there to be a war between the two. China holds a lot of US debt (over $1 trillion, or about 7% of US debt) and they wouldn't want that to be completely erased and China needs the American market to buy their cheap goods. The United States needs China as an investor in its debt for funding and needs cheap Chinese goods to fuel their consumer oriented economy.

Didn't India and Pakistan go to war in the 90's AFTER they had nukes? Didn't the Soviets and US have a lot of proxy wars? And just because something hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't happen.

Well if you look at the long list of countries America has invaded not one has nukes.

I'd say nukes are the most effective deterrent against a full-on invasion.

The US and the USSR never went to war directly, but they were archenemies. China and the US aren't archenemies, but they are adversaries.

Once China gets powerful enough, things will get ugly. Though, China's archenemy will probably always be Japan.

War with America (be it economic, cyber, or military) is just business. War with Japan is personal.

You'd have a hard time getting millions of Chinese people to attend an anti-America rally. The Chinese government could barely stop anti-Japanese rallies they started.

I think Taiwan is in even more immediate danger than Japan. China is salivating at having Formosa rejoining the main land.

I could see that potentially being resolved peacefully - or perhaps mostly bloodlessly is a better term.

The Chinese are nothing if not patient, just look at Hong Kong and Macau.

Taiwan only remains independent so long as America is willing to stand up to China.

Still, you never know, America's century isn't over just yet.

MAD has essentially guaranteed that nuclear war won't happen.

I think MAD is not an absolute gaurantee of safety. There can still be naval skirmishes and conventional warfare. Just like we don't use chemical weapons even though we have them, we could have an unspoken agreement to refrain from using nuclear weapons.

Not sure how he's going to get to Iceland with the whole Western World watching his every move.

They'll probably force him to land in the EU.

He's not a good return investment now. He doesn't have enough good secrets left that would warrant the headache of giving him asylum against the US's wishes. I think the DPRK is the only place that'd be crazy enough to take him now.

And he's crazy if he voluntarily moves to North Korea.

I'm not sure where the NK talk comes from but if he goes there he'll never get back out.

Yeah, I agree...if he goes to North Korea he will never be allowed to leave. His lawyers better be giving him better advice than that.

Well, it's one of the few places that will have him.

I think even the Russians would be like "uh... why don't you just turn yourself in instead."

North Korea only wants him so they can torture any other secrets he may have out of his ass. And keep him for life, barely breathing just enough to squeeze **** out of him.

I have to say Obama has proved to be a real disappointment when it comes to civil liberties. And well... most things.

Counter-intelligence is used so they don't have to resort to wide-scale black bagging.

Keep the opposition confused and divided with planted operatives. There' probably hundreds of ways to divert systematic change.

The point is there's no reason to spy on EVERYONE to stop a relatively small amount of Jihadists. If they want to spy on even one, single American they should require a damn good reason. How about a warrant for every individual case? There's a reason the founders created language to protect all Americans from unnecessary search and seizure.
