The insulting part is they don't even need or attempt to disguise this fact.

To me the battle isn't between liberals and conservatives. The real dichotomy is between those who are comfortable with losing civil liberties and those who aren't. Civil liberties are more important than any of the issues the left and right endlessly bicker about. Without civil liberties those issues simply don't matter any more.

Chavez' flunky just said Venezuela will take him (before going on a rant, and saying that Assad is the rightful president of Syria....

But Snowden's gotta get there himself.

Snowden probably won't be able to get to any country that grants him asylum. The EU is cooperating with US in the quest to bring him here for trial, so any plane he's even suspected of being on is going to be grounded. The president of Bolivia's plane was grounded just on the suspicion that he had Snowden on board. The willingness of other countries to refuse transit to the sitting president of a sovereign nation in hopes of turning Snowden over is telling. He is not going anywhere unless he somehow manages to sneak aboard a plane without anyone noticing. There is not much chance of that happening.

Venezuela is the best offer this knucklehead will get after spending all his capital diddering around in Hong Kong hotels and Moscow airports for so long. Venezuela is like Switzerland compared to ending up in a true hellhole like North Korea.

Supposedly he's in the transit area of Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport. Supposedly. No one has seen him in days, so he could be elsewhere.

I have no idea how he will get to Venezuela.

If he had been smart, he would have just walked through Europe to Iceland (well he'd have to get on a small boat at some point), but this guy seems to have a celebrity complex.

Did he go to Hong Kong before or after he became a fugitive?

Seems he had an opportunity to go to Venezuela from the beginning. If he leaked the info while there we might have been home free.

At least until Venezuela elected a right wing president.

If he had been smart he would have originally released these leaks anonymously from a country like Iceland, where citizenship would be a lot easier from already being inside the country (and before he acted like a self-important publicity hound). This guy's narcissm doomed him.

Why do you think this is the case?

Are you just echoing tv pundits?

I think he was under the impression that Hong Kong didn't have an extradition treaty with the US.

Probably should have Wikipedia'd that.

He claimed medical leave for epilepsy treatment from the NSA, then flew to Hong Kong before he was publicly outed as a leak.

Then the US requested that HK extradite him, and he flew to Moscow.

Totally echoing TV pundits. Not sure which ones, since I don't watch cable news. But yeah.

I think his self-assigned code-name "Verax" says it all.

Is kind of catchy though.

The NSA and CIA would probably be able to figure out who leaked the info based on NSA employees off the grid who at access to the leaked documents.

and Snowden's notoriety is the only reason the NSA leaks have been fron't page news for weeks. Something like this would be easily blacked out by the media otherwise.

Wrong. The NSA leaks aren't front page news. Snowden and where he'll seek refuge is front page news. His antics have totally buried anything that might be newsworthy.

I gotta say, I respect such honesty.

Took me off gaurd for a moment, I had to re-read and scan for any signs of sarcasm.

I've actually had people ask me (since I'm usually pretty informed on current events) what Edward Snowden was in trouble for.

Think I once said he stole a painting from a museum.

Hey I'm not complaining.

If this had just been some boring Wikileak business, it would have been forgotten in a week.

Edward Snowden's Where's Waldo-style escapade has sort of kept this thing in the back of people's minds. Way, way in the back, but better than nothing.

I'm just waiting for the movie.

They've already got Benedict Cumberbatch playing Julian Assange, how far behind can the Edward Snowden movie be?

Well, I do from time to time watch clips on youtube when they do or say something particularly dumb.

So you're saying people forgot about the NSA's broad spying more than if the story was buried weeks ago?

Maybe some newspaper readers and news network addicts but not all of them.

When a news story is buried hardly any widespread discussion continues. That's how powerful media can be.

Well then, I'll complain. Personally I find the Snowden story to be boring as hell and another sign of our declining, increasingly tabloid-driven media. The fact this circus is getting more attention than Egypt basically collapsing into a failed state is a crime within itself.

EDIT: you guys post way too fast.

Could we get a different photo of this guy?

I'm almost starting to believe this conspiracy theory of him begin a fictitious character invented by the government to distract us all from some bigger conspiracy.
