Oldman was 47 when they did Batman Begins and he was only mid 50`s when they did TDKR LOL.

I think Gordon should be a bit older than Bruce Wayne / Batman .For me there will be no better Gordon than Oldman but Brian Cranston is ok .

The only necessity of the reboot is that Bryan Cranston play Gordon

He's been mentioned for Batman a lot, but Karl Urban would make a decent Gordon in a couple of years.

If that doesn't effectively destroy Batman illusions, then nothing will

I think he'd make a really solid Batman, but I can just picture a bespectacled and mustached Urban dorking it up as Gordon, then pulling his bad-ass side out when the time calls for it. Combine his grumpiness as Bones and his tough guy act in his other roles and you have a pretty good idea of him as Gordon.

Aside from the obvious Cranston, Tom Waits could be fantastic as Gordon. Although he'd also be perfect casting as Mad Hatter. And Joker. And Batman. And Poison Ivy

Didn't do much in TDKR?
I'm pretty sure he:
-Discovered where Bane's lair was
-As you said, was injured because he discovered where Bane was.
-Motivated Batman to come back while he was in the hospital
-Promoted Blake to detective
-Took down two of Bane's thugs in the hospital
-Organized a rebellion against Bane
-Motivated Deputy Commissioner Foley to get off his lazy ass and fight
-Blocked the signal on the bomb
-Gave the eulogy at Batman's "funeral".
-FINALLY discovered who Batman is

The question in my mind isn't who should play the role as much as it is what the role should be. Gordon, more so than any other character in the batman mythos, is always relatively the same. He's always the same "good moral cop in a messed up city".

How can Cranston or any other actor bring something to the role that isn't a stale repeat of the TDK Gordon (who was PERFECT as the classic Gordon)? I think the reboot should focus on digging deeper into these characters rather than just plugging in new actors in the same roles.

Cranston is it for me. But can you imagine if Tom Hanks was cast for example? That would blow people's minds.

Honestly, they will probably dial Gordon back, which may be indicative of someone like Cranston not doing the part or acting in such a role.

Comic fans take for granted that Oldman nailed how Gordon has been depicted in comics, well more '80s and late '90s/early 2000s comics. He is usually depicted as old, inept and a bit oblivious. That is because Batman has a whole "Bat-family" to rely on and Gordon is more of an obligatory role as Batman's public servant cheerleader.

Look at the Burton/Schumaucher movies or the Adam West TV series. While ever since YO, Gordon has not been depicted as that perfunctory, he is often rarely more than that, including on the beloved TAS. It is those early stories where Batman doesn't have a "family," Year One and The Long Halloween and Dark Victory, that really push Gordon to the forefront. That is also why Nolan did it, because he wanted a Gordon who could act as Batman's partner and confidant. Intriguingly, when Nolan introduced his "Robin" within Blake, Gordon got pushed somewhat to the side like he does in most comic book stories.

If there is a full Bat-family in the next one, I imagine they will differentiate it from Nolan's take by not only downplaying Fox, but the rest of Nolan's version of a "Bat-family" including Gordon and, yes, even Catwoman.

Just a thought.

Good point. I don't think we'll get Dick Grayson until the 2nd solo film at the earliest. So im expecting 1 or 2 Justice League movies without Gordon and at least the first solo film with a LOT of Gordon material. Then maybe the 2nd one if they bring Grayson into it they may hold back on Gordon but I still think we can get some good stuff with him, similar to Rises. Then maybe as the series progresses further you could be right in that they wont do much with him since a bat-family may be established or simply Robin is Batman's sidekick 24/7.

I would cast Cranston for the first couple of films then if he doesn't want to start doing the character in smaller doses he can always leave and get re-cast.

I just think the first film or two will have some great things for the character.
