Oh, and Tommy Lee is balls awesome in it.

My tastes obviously vary enormously. I would rank Iron man, Thor, and Captain America all above Batman Begins and think they are very special. Batman Begins is great and for the most part, very tightly written and I my unpopular opinion, way better than TDK but, for me, just a level down from the marvel movies

I'll go there too. although the Marvel movies are very very close. I think they're all on the same playing field and a level above Batman Begins.

I still think nothing touches Begins.

Man Of Steel is fantastic, ive seen it 3 times so far. But as much as I love all the action and the story elements, it's still insanely busy as an origin film. The pacing and writing to Begins and all the nostalgic memories of seeing it in my teens just puts it above MOS/Donner's Superman/Spider-Man/TASM/Iron Man.

The breathing room is key in why Begins wins (in comparison to MOS which I feel the pacing worked just fine for that kind of sci-fi movie). The originality and emotion is also why it's better than any origin film that has come since. Marvel or DC.

I didn't like Captain America so I don't see how it comes even close to anything like BB.

Cool. But even then, everyone needs to watch MOS a couple of times at least before giving a proper review on how it compares to Begins. Because if you enjoy MOS the first time, chances are you'll be on a high for a few days (like I was). After a few times I still love it but I can judge it better.

Looking forward to your reaction Tequilla!

MOS is the best example why Begins is such a great movie. They both share magnificent ideas , and try to push for something new. Both also share flaws as the villain plot evolves . I will say this. I believe MOS the first time it was put on paper probably sounded as good as Begins. But they share a big difference. The execution. That's the filmmaker role. Where one is an extremely tight film that goes back and forth between time and space accentuating the evolution of the character , the other is a goddamn disjointed mess. An hodgepodge of themes and actions. Snyder isnt able to balance his own movie. It's a problem he always had. Sometimes scenes are too long , sometimes too short. Sometimes the momentum is completely broken. Transitions are jarring. MOS is like an extreme version of that.

Yes it's an enjoyable film, some cool production design , yes the action set piece in Smallville is amazing (and should be the standard from now on to these sort of cosmic forces battling each other). But it could have been so much better. There are some great foundations in this movie , that are not fully utilized. I sincerely hope they bring someone new to pen this movie in the sequel (they can keep goyer for the general ideas , something that he is good). Because the potential is all there.

But my biggest surprise was really the visuals of this movie. What the hell was Zack Snyder thinking ? The first hour is so jarring , the camera tilts to the right and lef constantly. Everytime. Everywhere. At least Krypton deserved a much more stable approach. Let me at least appreciate the production design. Then comes a fight that looks straight from Begins hazardous editing.

When Jonathan is speaking with Clark in the pickup , the camera is so unstable it hurts the eyes. What were they thinking ? Who are these camera operators ? Moving the camera doesnt imply re-framing and refocusing constantly. It looks extremely amateurish. I know Zack didnt had the same references as his adaptations of 300 and Watchmen , but did nobody storyboard some stuff ? There is some extremely amateurish direction in a bunch of scenes. It's infuriating when that's usually Snyder's strength.

Begins is still a king (by a large margin) . Followed by Donner's Superman. MOS ...maybe fourth. Its a good movie if i confine it to the superhero genre.

There was a bit of the shaky cam stuff going on to achieve a more real approach. I believe the entire movie was handheld. But sometimes it doesn't work. While the quick editing in fights during Begins was done brilliantly to show the audience the view of the criminals who can barely see this Bat character coming at them. Even then, Nolan/Pfister never went into the shaky cam gimmick during important dialogue.

It doesn't really bother me though, not too much anyway. Ive seen it handled a lot worse.

I love MOS, I think it's one of the greats in the genre. It gets better with each viewing. But it seems like me and you (Tequilla) agree that Begins had a pacing & overall feel that makes it the superior one.

People might hate me for saying this, but I enjoy MOS more than any previous Superman movie. It just hits all the right notes that I wanted for a Superman origin, something I can take seriously. Of course im hoping the sequel is an improvement. But as for originality, legendary, groundbreaking origins?? This is why the new boxset for TDK trilogy has Donner & Nolan sitting down to discuss their movies. Because Superman: The Movie and Batman Begins are the first origin stories for Supes and Bats. AND because they influenced so much.

But handheld doesn't have to mean shaky , instable , constant reframes , etc.

And that two step zoom. Oh god.

If there's a thing i've always loved in Zack Snyder was his methodical approach to the visuals. And then he does this !!!

I honestly think people have gone mad. The absurdity of cinematography choices we've been seeing in 200 million dollars productions is absolutely insane.

Oh I know, and you're right. I didn't notice it in the car but I notice it right away when they introduce Jor-El. It's all shaky and I don't think it helps the scene. I remember a friend of mine turned and said "Why is the camera shaking?". LOL.

That's why Nolan is the cream of the crop IMO. He can use a 250 million dollar production, push boundaries with Imax, etc and do it in a professional way. And his choices make sense for the scene, theyre not done for the sake of it.

Paul Thomas Anderson has praised Nolan with his massive budgets as well. I think when real filmmakers like that praise you, it's the highest compliment and it means you're doing something right.

Man of Steel has dethroned Begins as the best modern day Superhero origin film in my opinion, thought they just did it better.

A little thread I put together, vote!

What's your problem? I don't care that Begins got more votes cause I respect others opinions and I like a good discussion. Only thing that bugged me in that thread was people turning it into a convo about Iron Man. Oh and for the record I'm entitled to my own opinion.

BB has gone really down IMO. I had it 9 at first, then 8, then now 7. It just isn't as impressive as his films from The Prestige all the way to TDKR. As has been stated by others, Nolan hasn't matured to the director he is today. From the dialogue, acting, cinematography, etc. it doesn't stand criticism.

1. Iron Man
2. Captain America
3. First Class
4. Batman Begins
5. Spiderman

And MOS was a mess. The 2nd half was nothing but mindless action.

The cinematography was beautiful in BB, I thought. Wally and Nolan really started to hit their visual stride as early as Insomnia, and it carried through into BB.

Obviously, they took it up another notch in TDK and TDKR with the IMAX cinematography, but I really think all of Nolan's films are really strong visually. Even Memento.

Definitely
Begins has the most distinct look of any Nolan film, in my opinion.

Batman Begins is definitely the best Batman origin (early years) story done in live action but I still don't think they'll ever top Mask of the Phantasm.

I'd still take Batman Begins as the best origin film.

I also love Man of Steel, Iron Man, and the Amazing Spider-Man.

Stunned Captain America is being mentioned.

Hard to disagree with this. It's hard to compare live action with animation but MOTP is awesome.

Oh yeah animation clearly has an advantage in that if you can draw it and the budget amounts you can do it.

It's not hard to be bounds better than MOS. Just have scenes in your film with setups and payoffs.
