I think the perception is that MOS is a hit but not a gargantuan success. I don't think WB expected a billion dollars but after the OW, expectations were raised. The legs, here and oversees leveled off. So I don't think MOS earned a reputation as an overachiever.

All I was saying was I've read or heard from Jett of BOF and Sean Gerber of MMM that WBs were hoping for abit closer to a billion (like 800-850 mill). But that was just unrealstic in my eyes especially as it wasn't released in the greatest of slots and its a reboot after a not well receieved previous film.

Once again, exactly.
I can see them expecting*hoping* for 750 ish since TASM made that but 800-1 billion ? Very unrealistic expectations.

Couldn't hold the top spot for more than a week

Dear god, an analyst said that.

I'm curious exactly how much this film would have needed to do that. Perhaps it would have needed to perform as well as Ironman 3? The giant mega threequel and Joss Whedon victory lap.

IM3's second weekend 72mill
MU's opening weekend 82mill
(ingore WWZ, everyone else seems too).

Just seems like agenda imo.
Some context might help.

No, they think the sole reason Avengers sits at a billion and a half(half of which being domestic) is because of throwing the heroes into one film. A billion is something else entirely(just look at the all time charts). A few original and or origin films up there outside of the Cameron lot.

This is what scares me about Superman vs Batman, I'm psyched but what if they think the solution is just those two on screen and we don't get a great product or they disgregard the start MOS had made for them and sacrifice Clarks journey for a Superman Batman spectacle. I'm scared and excited all at the same time cause if SVB doesn't work a potential DC universe on film might be ****ed all because they were greedy ****ers.
If you call them greedy, make sure you do the same for the other studio(s).
That includes fox.

There is no such a thing as over achieving when it comes to a character like superman, even if the film made a billion, I guarantee you that many people would say that it was to be expected considering the character's world wide recognition.
As you said the film is a hit but not a monster hit, which is what to be expected if one follows the performances of previous reboots.

Getting snyder and goyer (again) to make the studio's one and only hope of matching disney's 2015 dominance is proof of the studio's satisfaction.

WB didn't expect it to hit or approach $1B.

I honestly can't remember the last time a tentpole movie like that had as much positive buzz surrounding it though. If you were to transport yourself back in time right around after that third trailer dropped, the idea that this thing could have grossed close to a billion didn't seem out of the question. I think at the very least WB was hoping this thing would be their next huge franchise in the wake of Harry Potter and Batman.

Yes it was the second highest gross of the year but I do believe it should have grossed a lot more. The marketing was there, the buzz was there... and judging on how this thing opened clearly the INTEREST was there.

Something obviously went wrong and WB is well aware of that. Although it's what I would have preferred, I'm just not sure how well a standalone sequel would have performed. I don't think the general public was necessarily clamoring for one.

That was my point had JLA been made years ago built on a DC Universe it would have been unique and probably grossed a billion plus like Avengers did. WBs seem to think that just making an Avengers type film they will make a billion.

I didn't mention other studios cause I was on about WBs specifically with their JLA plans.

A studio is always going to hope for more. We know that. MOS isn't a disappointment but did it way exceed their final expectations? I don't know. It may have come in just around where they expected to.

Studios want to make money.
I'm sure SONY didn't give a **** when they were counting their SM3 money and Paramount didn't give a **** when they were counting their Transformers money. It isn't the studios job to ensure a quality product, it's the film makers job.

No, they don't.

There's a reason this thing opened like it did. The public was absolutely ready and waiting for this movie.

38 people that voted on the poll did, not to mention 11/38 of them predicted 1.5.

The good news is we don't have to follow the daily box office anymore. I don't have to find out how much money MOS did in Slovakia.

Fanboys on a forum with zero concept of box office =/= those who invested in the film.

No you are wrong.
The general public hated Superman Returns and it failed at the box office.
Critics and according to people on here, the general public hated Man of Steel. It only made money cause of Nolan's name.
The entire public thinks Superman is a lame and boring character doe

And what lack of perception those 38 individuals had. No disrespect intended.

I mean this was a reboot, expecting a billion was crazy. I doubt even MoS 2 could get a billion with just Superman, BUT, now you add in Batman and I think it's possible. way early too predict but I like the possibilities.

I never expected it to make a billion tbh its made more than I was expecting cause tbh I was a little worried that Superman Returns may have done some damage but thankfully its been a hit.
