Batman 1989 takes it for me as one of the most overrated comic book films (Spider-Man I is a close second). Bruce Wayne was detached and had no nuance to his character -I fault Burton for this as he told Michael Keaton that it was up to his interpretation-, and Batman was even more shallow, and while Burton was masterful at recreating the comic Gotham City, the city appears to have no soul and no one gave a damn that a vigilante showed up to fight the filth. (what I mean is, look at TDK which showed improvement in dropping the crime rate, Batman 1989 pales in comparison...it makes it like no one cared/or was competent enough to do the job WITH Batman).

Exactly. It should basically be called, "The CBM's I Don't Like, and Someone Else Does."

I thought for something to be overrated, it had have a consensus of positivity about it to start with, like TDK or Avengers. But when you start naming every CBM that anyone ever liked, even the infamously divisive ones like TASM and MoS, it kinda loses it's purpose.

That said, I don't find any to be that overrated. I think both TDK and Avengers are rated as highly as they deserve, and even with the well-loved ones that I personally don't care for - like Superman: The Movie and Raimi's first Spider-Man - I can appreciate their significance to the genre despite them not appealing to my tastes, so I wouldn't call them "overrated," either.

Even "infamously divisive ones" on here are a whole other thing from how the GA sees them. Like it or not, nobody who takes the time to come on a site like this is part of the GA. Not even close. I think regarding films that you mentioned that such are in the "liked well enough" category among the GA.

It's the best of the Raimi films but in my book that's not saying a whole lot as those films never rose above average. But I could easily see how you might be bored by it.

I can honestly say after seeing that movie in theatres (once) I didn't care if it made a sequel or not (TDK is my favourite CBM of all time though).

We all know where this is going so let's be clear about it in the thread title. it should be the "THE DARK KNIGHT TRILIOGY'S DETRACTORS AND DEFENDERS ARGUE IN A CIRCLE WITH OCCASIONAL JABS AT MARVEL'S AVENGERS AND MAN OF STEEL WITH A HEAPING OF DISDAIN FOR THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN THREAD". If the history of SHHype forums is worth anything I think we can be sure this is how this is all going to unfold. Though I would be pleased to be proven wrong.

This thread should be retitled 'Comic Book Films you don't like'

Because some of the movies being listed are in no way shape or form lauded by the general audience so how exactly are they 'overrated'? MoS has a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

While I respect each of them and the impact they made on the world of superheroes in cinema, I don't enjoy watching them nearly as much as some posters/critics seem to or claim to. I think they were each followed by better direct sequels (Superman II, Batman Returns, Spider-Man 2) and eventually followed by far more entertaining and enjoyable reboots (Man of Steel, Batman Begins, Amazing Spider-Man)

You like Batman Returns? I hate that movie with a passion (the bits I can stay awake for that is).
Can't say I'm a fan of BB but it's ten times better than Batman '89.

Because an awful film that is generally rated as decent is overrated by definition. Being popular or critically acclaimed is neither here nor there.

Ahaha Amazing is on the top 10 CBM on user RT and 81% top critics. Voted 2nd best Spidey with SM2 topping it (by almost double though) if anything this board considers SM2 quite a bit superior to TASM and SM1
