That's what a few websites have said the budget was, but no way to know for certain

I'm pretty sure we had this debate in 2006 and, for better or worse, X-Men won.

At the time Xmen was the Bigger and more popular franchise, it also had a relatively small ammount of competition with only a G rated family movie "cars" coming out a week later. SuperMan however had problems down to the promotion itself, with bizzare "lets make this supposedly comic book action movie look romantic to gain female audience" TV spots. It also came out a week before the Pirates of the Caribbean 2 which was HUGE.

You see it doing better than The Wolverine and First Class did in their entire runs, in the first three days? How?

Also I'm not certain but don't Warner and Paramount have some sort of exclusivity to the IMAX Screens. I'm not sure, maybe it's only in some countries.

That's because it had insane Disney Promotion including TV shows and toy ads that ran before and months after the movie was released. It also combined about 4 franchises, so that also likely did the trick.

Hype from the fans that were gonna watch the movie anyway doesn't really mean much. If another studio did the same viral ads for a movie with a "geeky" audience they would probably see the same results.

The cast coming back will probably not pay a huge factor. The last film with the old cast came out 8 years ago, and with the Xmen franchise not having that insane-mega franchise vibe, missing out on Merchandise tie ins and TV cartoon shows over the past couple years, kids and possibly teenagers under the age of 16 just wont give a damn that Anna Paquin is playing Rogue again, and the people that do were probably already invested in the franchise anyway.

The Xmen characters just dont have the popularity they once did, and with Fox not being allowed to have Cartoons and merchandise ads play on kids TV constantly to promote the movie (i still see iron man ads when my kid watches nickelodeon), as well as build familiarity with the characters, the studio that allowed Thor to out gross Wolverine are will probably for the next Captain America to out gross their Xmen film.

Also the US have some movies coming out the week later that could really slow momentum, a Pixar movie would likely take away the family audience and the Seth Macfarlane comedy (considering how well his last film did) could take away young adults and some teens. I just dont see how DOFP, financially, could be the summer mega hit Fans want. It will do good though but it just wont re-position the franchise into that Summer-Juggernaut area that Pixar, Marvel, Transformers and even Fast and Furious are currently in. I imagine Fox would want that if they plan on expanding their X universe.
Well, Bah Humbag! Mr Negativity.

For an old man who has seen it all, it took you long enough to come on here! I do find your sudden arrival and burst of negativity a little suspicious. I also find all this guessing at box office performance amusing, to be honest.

Agreed. And here I thought I was the only one who perceived this. How...convenient it all seems, eh?

Are you being facetious or sincere?

Of course this film will outpace Wolverine and First class during its opening weekend--even if the reviews are bad. The Last Stand proved that critics are not a blocker in situations like this. Besides, The Wolverine and First Class properties are spin-offs from the original X-Men franchise. Not the other way around.

Nice username by the way.

I'm not a troll or anything I'm just a bored comic fan. OR AM I.

no, but in all seriousness I'm not a troll. I mean, I don't mean for my views to sound negative, I'm just very blunt and honest. see, I added a smiley

It may do better than the Wolverine but it won't gross $150 mil opening weekend. Thats insane.

And thanks for the compliment. People are very nice around here.

I'm hoping for that 3 day opening too. But since it's a long weekend, Box office usually quotes the monday as well so let's go with $180

I said this in another thread, but what Superman can or can't do at the Box Office isn't an indication of what other properties can do.

That's because "Superman is the first & most recognisable in the world" is an old paradigm. The GA doesn't care what hardcore comic fans deem an A-list or Z-list heros.

X3's numbers adjusted are something like $310m US / $610m WW (doesn't account for ex[anded overseas markets). So technically the audience is there they "just" have to be won back. No easy task I know, but if Singer delivers...

I just think that it's way too early to predict big things now based on trending, tweeting and an incomplete leaked lowres trailer. And that while the film has some factors going for it, it also has other factors working against it. At the very least, we'd need to see the first official trailer, with the finished special effects and everything.

Maybe the new stuff like time travel and robots will get the audience's interest, but then it's not like they were never seen on screen before. And dystopian movies are honestly dime a dozen these days. Will the public think them special because they were never used in an X-Men movie? Maybe, maybe not.
If a movie has been continuously trending for months before its release, its a sign that it would perform very well. The Wolverine/First Class didn't have that, so it make sense why those two didn't perform great at the box-office.
