Definitely go see Rise of the Planet of the Apes. I think the CGI is going to look terrible in another 5-10 years, but otherwise it has a very good story and is a fun action/adventure film.

Just a friendly heads up if anyone is still looking to buy the blu ray/DVD/digital copy FYE stores ( For Your Entertainment) has it for 15 bucks which is a steal considering most stores like Best Buy and Wal Mart have it for 25 bucks. Sorry of this is old news.

Exclusive: J.J. Abrams Apologizes for His Lens Flares

Quote:
There's two things we know for sure about director J.J. Abrams: he won't tell you a damned thing about his movies, and he really loves lens flares. Lens flares are a photographic effect that create a haze in the motion picture image you see in films like Star Trek, Super 8 and Star Trek Into Darkness, and Abrams' love of the visual technique has been widely noticed, and often mocked, by fans of his movies.

So when CraveOnline cornered J.J. Abrams on the red carpet for the Star Trek Into Darkness Blu-ray release party, we had to ask him… What's up with those lens flares? His answer may be the most surprising thing he's done in years. He apologized.

"I know I get a lot of grief for that," says Abrams. "But I'll tell you, there are times when I'm working on a shot, I think, 'Oh this would be really cool… with a lens flare.' But I know it's too much, and I apologize. I'm so aware of it now. I was showing my wife an early cut of Star Trek Into Darkness and there was this one scene where she was literally like, 'I just can't see what's going on. I don't understand what that is.' I was like, 'Yeah, I went too nuts on this.'"

"This is how stupid it was," J.J. Abrams added. "I actually had to use ILM [Industrial Light & Magic] to remove lens flare in a couple of shots, which is, I know, moronic. But I think admitting you're an addict is the first step towards recovery."

We followed up with a question about the future of Star Trek on television, which, sadly, Abrams says there is no hope for. Watch the video to learn more.

Star Trek Into Darkness, lens flare and all, is now available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Call me crazy but the more i watch this film the more I feel that narrative feels incredibly small. Anyone else agree?

What do you mean? As in not big enough themes or message from the story?

Which again, would be fine, but there's nothing to counterbalance that for people like myself who think Star Trek is at its best when it's being thoughtful and introspective.
By far? Just in terms of film making it's got shaky cam, that's about it. Have you seen DS9??? It's more Star Wars-y than the Prequel Trilogy movies combined! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wKYG4jdIbk Skip to 26:00 !

The difference with DS9 is that it wasn't driven by its action and space battles. The thing with Star Trek is that the action was always there, its just that there wasn't a big enough budget to use it more often and make it look better.

I do think Star Trek has to return to television at some point though.

The first film was huge, but that's also because it was introducing the new characters, the new timeline, almost making it an "event film." Its hard to make a sequel to a movie like that which is much bigger, you know? Joss Whedon even said that the sequel to the Avengers isn't going to be as epic.

I really enjoy this movie. Cumberbatch played an excellent Khan and I hope to see him in the future Star Trek movies.

Sad news knowing Abrams won't be directing the next installment as he is working on Star Wars Episode VII.

I love Abrams' two Star Trek films, but I'm glad we're getting a new director. A new vision is what can help keep the franchise feel fresh.

I hope Khan is back in the next movie. Also, the first movie and its sequel are among my favorite movies, I wish there was more discussion on these forums, but the Star Trek boards seem pretty dead

Yeah, there seems to only be a real discussion when a new movie is coming out. We'll probably have the ST forum more active in 2015 or so.

I love the above mashup trailer; it made me want to rewatch STID...which I might do after work, tomorrow.

I want to watch STID again at some point. I'm thinking of just doing a marathon of all the ST films.
