A top 5 is hard for me because there are always a few I forget and want to add in later

As of right now:
GMK
Gojira
Godzilla vs. Mecha Ghidrah
Godzilla Vs. Destroyah
Godzilla Vs. Biollante

The whole Heisei era is my favorite, really. I love them all. Even the much maligned Godzilla Vs. Spacegodzilla. I really only truly dislike a few Godzilla films to be honest.

Heisei is my favorite as well. I was surprised to find that a lot of Godzilla fans don't like it very much.

Edit: Reposting my list because I hate getting stuck at the bottom a page.

Top Five:
  • Godzilla
  • Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
  • Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: All-Out Monsters Attack
  • Godzilla vs. Biollante
  • Destroy All Monsters

Honorable Mentions:
  • Mothra vs. Godzilla
  • Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster
  • Invasion of Astro-Monster
  • Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster
  • Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla
  • The Return of Godzilla
  • Godzilla vs. Mothra
  • Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla
  • Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.
  • Godzilla: Final Wars

I don't hate Son of Godzilla. At all. It's actually quite hilarious when you have friends or family watching it with you. Though, the ending and the music that plays during the ending is quite beautiful.

Son of Godzilla rocks

As much as this may enrage some Godzilla fans, I would say my least favorite era is Showa. Many of the entries I find very tedious and dull until the monster mashing happens. The Heisei and Millennium era's mostly fix that problem for me.

That's not to say I dislike all of Showa, not at all.

Gojira
Godzilla Raids Again
King Kong Vs. Godzilla
Mothra Vs. Godzilla
Son of Godzilla
Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla
Terror of Mechagodzilla
Godzilla Vs. the Smog Monster (odd choice but there is something about it I enjoy on a train wreck level. And the Smog Monster is actually pretty cool).

Those are really the only Showa films I enjoy. I find fan favorites like Ghidrah the Three-Head Monster, Destroy All Monsters and Invasion of the Astro Monster really overrated as they fall into that category of dull and tedious.

I was out of town for a few days, so I finally got to see the leaked teaser. It felt like I was seeing an old friend again after several years. I can't wait for this movie.

Godzilla vs Destroyah
Godzilla vs King Ghidorah ( Shindo's death is probably the best moment of the franchise)
Return of Godzilla
Godzilla
Godzilla vs Biollante

Basically most of Heisei plus the original.

Maybe, maybe not top 5. But here it is:
Gojira/Godzilla (1954)
Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack (2001)
Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989)
Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)
Godzilla (1998) (There's a reason, guys. There's a reason)

I honestly don't hate the 98 film either. I grew up with it. It's got impressive effects and action even today and it's got a good atmosphere to it. I do, on the other hand, agree with a lot of the criticisms lobbed at it. Namely the forced humor, the acting (Broderick actually doesn't bother me though) and the run time is a bit too long. As far as "it's not Godzilla" argument goes...his characterization never bothered me.

I tend to view the Godzilla franchise in a similar way to the Bond franchise.

98' was like that crappy Casino Royale spoof

That's not my reason at all. I put G'98 on the list because of one reason: it got me into Godzilla.

Back in '97, before the G'98 teaser, I knew of Godzilla, but only saw one film (Godzilla vs. Megalon) and nothing else. Sure I did see the Godzilla cartoon, but only to pass the time and wasn't into it at all. After the teaser, I was so jazzed up that I wanted to check out the Godzilla films. I even remember, because of the big news over the movie, that Fox was airing a Godzilla film each Saturday the entire month. So I saw Godzilla, King of the Monsters; Mothra vs Godzilla; Monster Zero; even, omg, Godzilla's Revenge. Those and many more movies were being released in VHS, so I got Godzilla 1985, and Mechagodzilla, etc. Then Tristar released the Godzilla movies from the '90s that didn't a release yet at the time, and I got those. Hell, a beatnik program from a local channel aired Son of Godzilla, and it was on after midnight; I stayed up to watch that. I got into Godzilla thanks to G'98, a movie I was excited to see in the months before it opened. And once the movie came out; even though my opinion is very different now towards the movie, I enjoyed it and people were talking about it at school, asking me if I saw it when it came out (I saw it a day earlier). I still thought they could improve the concepts with the sequel, but that never happened, but at least there was Godzilla: The Series.

So yeah, that's why G'98 is on my list. Batman '66 is the same way; I got introduced to Batman with the Adam West Batman by its movie (knew about the show afterwards), and that was on a VHS tape with Batman '89; so I watched two Batman movies back to back everyday, and got myself "caught up" with the Keaton film. I love the Keaton Batman film and any dark, serious, and real Batman over anything Adam West, but I do credit it for introducing me to the character.

P.S. I was probably one of the very few who figured out what Godzilla/Zilla looked like from what was revealed to us then putting them together. Once Zilla was revealed, you cannot imagine how happy I was.
