Ok, I don't particularly care for Kubirck's style but I can at least objectively see that he was a pioneer in the medium lol

I've always wondered how you lose the internet. Now, I know.

While I can see not being into Kubricks films, there is no denying the man was a master of the camera.

And right when I thought it was humanly impossible to make it worse... enter the aliens, out of absolutely nowhere and for no reason other than give this sugar-coated sad story even more sad sugar. I'm so sick of this nonsense. Kubrick GAVE Spielberg permission to make the film as he felt it was more towards his sensibilites! So if you wanna blindly hate on somebody, hate on Kubrick for giving Spielberg his blessing.
Do you honestly think Kubricks version would have been any less sad? Puh-leeez. AI is one of Spielberg's bleakest films. Sugar coated? Are you high? Which is it? Too sad or too sugar coated? Pick one. And they weren't aliens. They were lifeforms that evolved ON EARTH. They were the highest versions of Mecha.

Sad is fine. I meant sad in a self-indulgent way. Spielberg tried so hard to make David a victim that fell into absurdities more often than not. Like this idea that someone would put a lot of thought into creating robot boys so perfect that people would accept them as real... and then he goes and make them all look the exact same, and with the same name. Because parenthood is about, you know, having the exact same son as everyone else.

Oh, but that was shocking for poor old poor poor thingie poor David and made him sadder than he was, so it's fine.

People act like like Spielberg twisted his mustache and laughed manically while stealing AI film from Kubricks coffin just to piss off the Kubrick fanboys. This was The Beards love letter and farewell to Kubrick. Anybody not blindly by Kubrick elitism can see that. You don't have to like the film, but acting like Spielberg purposefully made it just to piss YOU off is ridiculous. And I'm not talking about the casuals who just don't care for the film. I'm talking about all the "Kubrick would be rolling in his grave. Kubrick would have done it so much better!" people.

That's the whole point. It was a vanity project. And if I'm not mistaken wasn't David the only model distributed? The film never took the time to show Davids all over the place. Isn't that the point of showing the shutdown factory with all the Davids in it? And I still fail to see how Kubricks film would be any less sad or bleak. If anything I'm inclined to think his would be ever sadder.

I hate Kubrick too then? The movie is still as bad as it was before you told me to hate Kubrick. And Spielberg is still its director. I don't get how this changes anything.

They could have been the souls of Santa Claus's reindeer, they came our of nowhere and there's no explanation whatsoever about what/who they are, no background, which made them pretty gratuitous.

I'm lost, where did I say Spielberg robbed anything?

I just said Kubrick would have done a much better work with it. The rest is just your fabrication.

The movie made pretty clear that they had made all those identical robots all the same with the same name. That's all we need to know they thought that would work. They invcested millions in those robots after all, I don't think they made them just to pile them up in their factories, even if that was what happened in the end.

Kubrick would have probably been sad and bleak, but not gratuitously as Spielberg's A.I. was.

Look, I'll lay it down. It's cool if you don't like his movies. In a lot of ways, I can understand that (especially his later work, which I think is generally pretty polarizing).

BUT, having said that, you can objectionably look at his films and see they are far from awful. Even his worse has astonishing pace, camera work, etc. He was one of the most influential directors ever, and you can see his fingerprints all over the place (especially when it comes to cinematography). I know, this is all unpopular opinion thread, so we all are suppose to be cool about whatever opinion blows through, but it's kind of like saying Jack Kirby's art sucks. You may not like it, but you're just being on crazy pills if you don't see the artistic merit behind it. I mean, you can be one of those people who don't care about artistic merit behind anything, but that just sort of leads to a dead-in of 'yeah, I liked it' or 'no, I didn't like it' with no way in between.

His story telling is depressingly bad, he took bad ideas and wrapped them with bad stories
Spartacus is an exception

I might have posted this before but Martyrs is an incredibly overrated piece of torture porn trash. I truly do not understand why people think it is anything but a terrible movie.

Say what you will about Spielberg's direction, but can't the actual story elements all be traced back to Kubrick himself? I can understand you thinking Kubrick would've directed the film better, but I don't understand why you'd think stuff like the "aliens" would be absent. Those were his inventions.

I'll explain better: the aliens thing in itself is not good or bad. The way Spielberg did, it was gratuitous (comes from nowhere without any kind of background or explanation) and way too convenient (they had just the right powers to make the ending possible but enough so it would be, once again, sad).
